We are rail riding this year with the left front wheel raised. Is it really necessary to polish the LF axle and sand/shave the whel, since the wheel won't be contacting the track?
Test & Tune is on the 27th, and the 25th is my last day off to get these two cars done and aligned for the Pack and District races.

I would and do. You hope your rr grabs the rail and sticks, but if it doesn't then you want a wheel on the other side with at least a good polish and graphite on the inside, and even though the tread won't touch the track, you want it to spin good if it hits the rail.

I hadn't really thought of that. I did a last-minute 3-wheel adjustment to the boys' cars last year, and with the way they were aligned (a.k.a. they weren't), they bounced back and forth a lot. They still did well (1st Tigers-5th or 6th overall, 2nd Wolf-4th overall). I had polished all the axles and wheels since I had set it up for a 4-wheel run. It may have helped. This year I'm taking the time to align them for rail riding. If everything goes right, this year could prove to be the start of our clan's dynasty (I have 6 boys, from Bear cub to 2mo. old). 2 of the 3 that beat my oldest in the overall pack race won't be back, and the 3rd is a Webelos2. I'd hate to think that leaving one wheel and axle untouched could "derail" our plan to take over the... sorry. Getting carried away. ;D
