I am looking for ideas on how I can accurately cut new axle grooves to extend the wheelbase of the car. Our rules allow extended wheelbase cars that do not exceed 7 inches in overall length. Thanks!

I hope you have a table saw.
This is the info on the blade.
Freud - Model DIABLO - specs. 7 1/4 x 40T finish - red (available at Home Depot)
Part# D0740R
This blade measures .061 (with my caliper) and when mounted, groove is .071 (.010 wobble)
Hope this helps. It worked for me.

Rando: This is what I would try if I needed to make new slots and I did not have a table saw. First, measure exactly .60" from each end of the block and mark each .60" spot on the bottom of the block. Using a t-square draw a line across the block at one of the .60" marks. If drawn carefully the line should be exactly 90 degrees to the side of the block. Using the same side of the block as a reference guide, turn the t-square over and draw a line across the block at the .60" mark at the other end of the block. Next using an Exacto miter box and Exacto razor saw carefully saw the slots at the lines you drew with the square. Coincidently, the Exacto miter box is 1.75" wide and fits a pinewood derby block pretty well. If the block is loose in the miter box just use business cards on one side to tighten it up. You can get an Exacto miter box and razor saw at any crafts store and it will set you back about $20.00. They are not giving them away but it beats the heck out of a table saw if you don't already have one. The slots should be 1/8" deep and about .07" wide. If .07" is to tight you can always widen it. Getting the depth and width consistent will be a challenge. A table saw would be better, but if you have no other way to do it, this might work for you. After you've made your slots, I'd still use the Pro Body tool. Let me know if this works for you. If it does, I might try it myself  . As an after thought -- I want to strongly encourage you to double check your rules. I never, ever, heard of a rule that allowes you to extend the wheel base but forbids axle holes. Usually either the original slots must be used, OR the wheel base may be extended and axle holes may be drilled/used instead of slots. It's worth asking because what you are trying to do is not going to be easy. Just a thought. ProQuest/Steve H. |

Picture the following, then go back and check your rules to ensure they allow this: Use the Pro Body Tool to drill your nice, square, even depth holes of juuuuust the right size, then go back and cut a groove from the bottom of the block up to your holes using a hack saw with a single blade (don't want to go too wide and hose up your nice holes). Typically "gotta have slot" rules are there for visibility of the axle, and the axle would be sitting visibly (and snugly  ) in a nice slot with this method. (If there is a stipulation on slot width (some people go crazy with their rules), I would probably still start with what I suggested above and then trim out the extra with an Exacto knife) We really like the bit that comes with the Pro Body tool (#44 I think) because it cuts a hole that provides just the right amount of tension on the axles - they are held firmly in place, yet with a little effort (and care!!!) you can still remove the wheels when you need to for alignment, etc. Not too loose, not too tight, juuuuust right. Bubba p.s. No charge Bill L., we really love the Pro Body tool... almost as much as the Axle Press  (make sure you slip one of each in our Christmas Card this year LOL) ;D |
