Hello everyone,
Our pack is purchasing a new track this year, and I have offered to buy our old wooden track, and use it for a town club racing league. Being big into helping the kids (I am the Cubmaster in town as well) I thought it would be a great idea to take the track to the local children's hospital (I am conversing back and forth with the Hospital's staff via email) and run a race for the kids who are there for treatment. What I want to do is get a bunch of kits, and have all the fathers, son's mother's etc in our group pitch in and build a bunch of cars, let the kids at the hospital pick out one each, and have them race. I do not plan on weighting these cars, because I think it would get too expensive, and we are running on limited funds as is, but I figured we would all get together and do axle's, wheels, etc, cut the cars and paint them different colors and patterns. I thought the kids at the hospital would have a blast as I know we all do, and they would each get to keep the car they picked. What we are looking for is a sponsor for kits, etc. As nice as it would be to not have to pay for the kits, we know that asking for 30-40 or more kits is a bit much, so we are willing to pay for the kits, just hoping to get them at a discount, or something along those lines. I think it's really important that these boys see what joy you can bring to someone less fortunate than you, and we can do it by showing them something we all love so much. So in saying this, is anyone willing and able to help out? I'll give any information you need, as I want everyone to understand we are legit, and I am VERY serious about getting this going, maybe for the early summer time. Thansk for reading everyone, if all this does is inspire others to do something similar, then I feel like we have done a service.
Thanks! Dave

The only thing that they dont have is the rules with the kit. Ill have to send just the basic block, with 4 wheels, and axles.

Great big heart, fatdaddy and a great big idea to go along with it. I don't have much in the way of kits or parts laying around, but would love to help in some way. If you need extra help in putting together some cars, I would gladly help out that way also.

Wow. The response to this has been absolutely amazing. I can't thank you guys enough for being willing to help. For those who have asked for info, I am PM'ing you my information after I write this. Thank you all for the kind words, and your generosity, I honestly never expected this level of response. I will keep you all updated on progress as well as pictures of the process and the actual day we do the racing. I'm hoping to do this in the early summer, when the weather here in CT is nicer, and hopefully we can do it outside, so the kids can get some fresh air and feel the electricity from racing. Thanks again all, and keep this up, if it inspires someone else to do the same, I'll help in whatever way I can!
Dave

A couple follow up questions. Would you like some of these pre-cut into wedges or other shapes? With the band saw and belt sander we could knock out a few good ones in a short time. Maybe put the boys to work with the Pro Body tool and pre-drill your holes also ;D Also, we have some "extra" Pinecar dry transfer decals you could have. Interested? Finally, would getting some "pre-builts" be good? I saw Enrico's post above, I could ship him (or hand deliver if he comes out to our Council race ) some kits, let him go at it and ship you the finished cars. Thoughts? Bubba

Bubba Sorry it took so long to respond, my father in law retired from the navy yesterday, and I was too busy celebrating to get online In response, I wouldnt mind if some of the kits were cut, it would make an easier job for us on this end. I know some of my guys want to cut cars, and that's great, but for those of us who don't have tools, a pre cut would be ideal, and we could spend more time on wheels and axles than trying to find a place to cut a car. As far as Enrico goes, feel free to ship him a few, that's an awesome idea as well. Thanks for all the help guys, you have no idea how much I appreciate all this! Dave

I want to publicly thenk DerbyDoc and Lucky13, I recieved packages from both of them today, and I am grateful nearly to the point of tears, and believe me, the last thing you want to see is a 400lb fat man crying over pinewood derby parts You guys are amazing. Thank you again for all of your generosity, these parts are going to make a bunch of kids very happy, even if it's just for a day. Please stay tuned, I have a special thread I'm going to post up next, but check back with this one, as it will have updates, and pictures once I get some!

My oldest son spent some time in and out of the hospital when he was young and I know how gloomy it can be for the kids. Anyone who is willing to volunteer to do something like you're doing deserves to be helped out. I look forward to seeing the pictures of the kids and their cars !! Good luck with everything. Lucky 13

Do you have enough kits or do you want some more? I have some pine-car wedge kits that can be used for a good cause.

We have about 20 kits right now, and I'm looking at at least 30 for race day, so fo course more would be welcome, and we would be greatly appreciative of your donation. Again, thanks to everyone, we start the building processes in the coming weeks, to have the cars ready for early summer, so keep looking back for pictures!

Fatdaddy, GoBubbaGo sent me some kits and I am cutting them into different shapes for you. Do you need them sanded and the axles and wheels prepped also? Let me know how much you want done to them, I will help with whatever you need, and will ship them out next week.

Dave: Any update on the date? I'm pretty much done with mine and getting ready to ship them out, probably tomorrow. I got a little carried away Picture the following conversation in my head - "Well, c'mon Bubba, if you're gonna cut the block you might as well weight it. And if you're gonna do that you really need to cover the weight holes and sand 'em smooth, and you do have some leftover paint down in the basement, ...and you're surely not gonna send completely unprepped wheels and axles??? c'mon, Bubba...." (Sidebar - does anyone else suffer from this? Is it just a Pinehead thing?) 5 completed cars heading your way. Not fully prepped "Bubba specials" (only used 2 grades of wet/dry sandpaper on the axles instead of the usual 9 + Mothers ), but more than the cut blocks and raw parts I started out planning to send LOL Looking forward to some pics of your event. Good Luck! Bubba

Hey Dudes: Just an FYI that I talked to Dave on the phone this AM and he should be logging back on sometime in the next week to give us an update. Talked to him on his cell, apparently his work schedule has gone a little crazy in the last few weeks and he hasn't been able to log on. Bubba

Hey all, I'm still here, attempting yet a different avenue, as the local hospital does not have enough kids in regularly to be able to support what we are doing, so I am bouncing emails with someone from a local agency that deals with fatherhood initiatives and families who might benefit from this. I will have something doen before the summer is over, regardless, thanks to you all for your generosity, I have rec'd several mor epackages, and everything is coming together, it's just a matter of when

UPDATE- I wasnt able to put anything togetherr for this past summer (obviously) however I have been in contact with a friend looking to do something with the children at Mass General in worcester, MA sometime this upcoming summer, and she wants to work with us on this pinewood project. Thanks to everyone who pitched in, all your supplies are sitting in my workshop, eagerly awaiting use. Sorry I havent been able to update sooner, my job is tied directly to the economy (real estate) and I have been swamped over the last 6 months with work, and at this point I am struggling to find time to help my son build his car this year, however I am resilient, and this will all come together in due time!
Thanks! Dave
