I may be attending a state wide derby in April with my two sons and they're having an open race for the parents. This is going to be an "anything goes" race and the only requirements are BSA-approved weight, width and length. Any type of wheel, axle or lubricant will be allowed. I'm thinking of building myself a car for this race and would like some recommendations from some of the pros that race in WIRL. I've never had any experience with the razer wheels being used. I saw on the Max V site that he sells 3 different types of wheels (RS & RSN I believe) and also a a wheel with bearings on the axles. I'd appreciate any ideas you guys might have on the fastest wheel/axle combination.

Well, there are a few ways to look at it. Derby Worx builds the "RS" and "RSN" wheels. The "RS" being a razor style wheel standard size axle that is easy to get a GOOD alignment on and run very fast with either wet or dry lubricant. The "RSN" wheel is also a razor style wheel but on a very small diameter needle axle. Although a bit faster, about 0.020 sec., these wheels require some skill and patients for a GOOD alignment and seem to like wet lube better. They also do not like rough tracks. Bearings are a great choice when weight is of no limit in the open class but they have not produced great numbers for us in the 5 to 6 oz. categories.
Best of luck.
