I am not a painter so looking for help.......I have read ninjarabbi's breakdown on painting...But my question is what type of paint do I want as a base. I found this site.....http://www.plastikote.com/plastikote/auto/index.jsp...platic-kote is made by HOK but is you look under auto section then CUSTOMIZATION PAINTS there kandy's and pearls are limited to one base color...but under metal flake has 6 corlors...Would the metal flake be ok to use as a base

BLACK is always good!! Hahahah, Actually we do a lot of solid orange.
I am not a painter, but some of the bikes i have done, it was a metal flake base color and a translucent candy color over it. Seemed like the base was the foundation for flake and base color and the hue was more of how many coats of candy. I remember turning a candy blue into almost to dark with one to many colors.
I think i would try doing a extra scrap car at the same time, do the practice one first, then duplicate or adjust on the real one with each coat. Just an idea.
I am sure someone like DWPT can help more than me.
Good Luck

Racer X! Who? ;D I like Black myself. OhioFitter, Get Plastic Spoooons! Cheaper and disposable. Spray the base color on a plastic sthingy. Let dry. Spray candy color over that. Base color will shine through the candy color since the candy is transparent. Basic thought here for Candy colors, is that you want a light base color first before a darker overcoat. You could start with a dark or black base, but you would not be able to do any candy color over it unless you first put on a white, silver, or gold graphic base, then the candy. IF you want to go with a dark color base, then you could just use a pearl color for the graphics since the Pearls are not transparent.

There are a multitude of options when using Kandies. If you're going to stick with Plastikote, you can use their "Metallic Paint" under their specialty listing (3 down from Metal Flake). Gold Metallic covered with the Lime Time Green Pearl and topped with Organic Green Kandy will make for a really nice color (I've seen something close on a model car). Here is the link to it: www.briansmodelcars.com/galleries/gallery/3059I will be using the Kustom Kolor bottle paints through my airbrush (HoK pigments in a quasi-lacquer). My Wolf wants the Aquarius Shift (green to blue) and my Bear wants the Carribean Surf (copper to green). I'm interested in seeing how they turn out. The PlastiKote KustomEffex has these colors.
