Hey guys, thanks for the birthday wishes. It was a good day. Very laid back. Before dinner I got to finish my leveling system and run a few cars- then went back inside to my present from the family- a new craftsman scroll saw I haven't unboxed it yet but wait, maybe tonight Someone please tell me that I'm not turning into a basement dweller??? Now all I need is a band saw and a belt sander and I'll be complete ;D Just realized, Christmas is only 5 months and one week away! ;D

Hey Sappington, You weren't serious with the belt sander and the band saw completing your list were you? I'm sure we can take care of that. Just to get things started, I'll throw in the link for one of my son's favorite toys ( ok, it's one of my favorites). It is a sweet little piece of equipment to turn your drill press into a very basic milling machine. Certainly such a setup does not rival a regular milling machine, but for something small in size and quantity, like say a pinewood derby car body, it is fun to mess with and it's great for kids. Now, if everyone else will throw in a suggestion of their favorite toy under $100, w can take care of Sappington's Christmas list in short order. www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?FamilyID=5512

Hey there DerbyDominator- thanks for the cool idea. I checked it out and now I WANT one too! What's the approximate size of the base? So I know it will fit on my drill press.
I also looked at the Delta belt sander for $119. Any experience with belt sanders? I would think they would be great for helping square wood blocks and for speeding up detail work.

Hey Doug, I bought this drill press vise thru Harbor Frieght for 49.99. It is awesome. I use it now to drill all of my axle holes with great success. Very easy to drill level and square holes. Also use to drill holes for weight and I would image could be adapted to use for milling weight pockets.
As for a belt sander, I can't build a car without one. I cut my cars out with a scroll saw roughly then use belt sander for final shaping. Then final sand and shape by hand. I can get more accurate edges and surfaces using belt sander than a dremel. I also use my belt sander when narrowing the front end. My belt sander has a vertical sanding disc, just draw straight line put on beltsander vertical table and sand block down to narrow. Very square and level.
See ya
Scott
