I just bought a 6 inch Craftsman 109 lathe off of ebay. Now I'm trying to get bought a nice dc motor, small 3 jaw chuck, tiny tail stock chuck and tooling. I have only ran a wood lathe but I'm sure I'll be turning some wheels in no time. I should have it in a couple of weeks. I also will be turning some metal detecting accessories I hope to sell to pay for the lathe. Also my missing out on a few races at $45.00 a pop helps too. That's how I justified my purchase and explained it to my wife!
Any suggestions are welcome...

I have machined hundreds of BSA wheels. If you need any help getting started, just drop me a PM, or email. Good luck with the new equipment. THe wheel mandrel will help you get started easily.  |

DD,
I have the mandrel. But I want to make needle wheels. Now what? I assume I start with 1.25 inch Delrin.

You need a high quality needle sized bit to start. A lot of the cheap needle bits will drift even when drilling into delrin. Im definately not a master at machining delrin wheels (Thats why I use DerbyWorx  ) but you might want to make your wheels to fit the mandrel so you can hold them for machining. Then machine an insert that converts them to needle bore wheels. Make the insert a "press fit" into the larger bores. |
