Hello, Is the nickel plating on an axle significantly better than the zinc plated. Can you polish a zinc axle to as good a finish as the nickel.I have been assembling a little motorized polishing jig. One motor to rotate the axle and another with an oscillating arm to apply the polish. I purchased the motors and speed controllers at MPJ.com. This setup could allow the axles to receive an unlimited amount of polishing. This leads to the next question. What polish would be recommended for this procedure. I have most of the jig complete. Thanks for any advice you guys can provide.

Hey JB,
The nickel plated axles are better, just not sure how much the advantage is in terms of seconds. I imagine it is in thousandths of a second. We start at 1500 grit for about 15-20 seconds and work out way up from there although I believe some recommend starting at 2000. We go to 8000 grit and then either Blue Magic or Mother's polish. Certainly no less than 1500 as it will definitely take the coating off. Just as important is the axle size. I would suggest around .090 or .091 outside diameter.
Your jig setup sounds pretty neat. One issue though is that with the Blue Magic or Mother's, it is recommended to polish only until the polish turns black which would be less than a minute. After that, you are doing more harm than good.
Hope that helps!
