Hi all,
I am putting together matching wheel sets for this years derby and I am confused over which mold numbers are preferred.
MaxV's tests in Aug 2008 suggest that molds 6, 7, 12, 13 & 16 are the better molds but as I search through other sites I have seen other numbers. For instance DerbyDominator's "Premium Match Set" are from molds 4, 7 & 8.
Which molds are preferred?
Thanks in advance!

I guess by the lack of responses the answer may not be as clear cut as I expected. Since I posted I prepared three sets of wheels, one set was matched and the other two sets had three matches and one odd wheel. The matched set was easy to prepare and took me very little time, the other two sets took me alot more time. This was becasue the odd wheel either caused me to shave forever on the other three to get them all to the same size or the opposite where I had to shave alot on the odd wheel. I am only running three wheels so that odd one doesn't really matter, but I was experimenting. I have read that there are some bad molds numbers that I should stay away from..... but in the end it looks like to me that it is more important to have a matched wheel set regardless of mold number then to have a particular mold number matched set.

I used to have problems with the #13, but last year they seemed to be better. The #9 wheels have always been a problem for me also.

FiveKids, With regard to the 12's, the only reason I do not have them as premium wheels is that I do not have any more of that number in inventory. They were the best wheels in my opinion based on testing and we used the last ones for our local pack workshop. As for the 13's, historical evidence suggested that they were not a premium wheel, but besides DerbyWorx, I doubt anyone purchases and tests more wheels than Max V. His website has been online longer than anyone's I believe and his sales would reflect that. So, I feel you should be confident in his testing. However, depending on the timing of your race, the entire issue may be a mute point as the new BSA wheels are now hitting the market and they present a distinct advantage vs. the old wheels. We have not obtained enough of the new wheels to do any new mold testing but let me present some other thoughts that may help with your decision. 1) If you cannot get some of the new wheels and you must have the wheels now, then purchase the 12's 2) If you can wait or can get a set of the new wheels, then by all means do so. You should be able to get them at a local derby scout shop. Supposedly the new sets have the white tops on the wheel packs. I do not believe they are putting the new wheels in the box kit yet. 3) A set of matching wheel mold numbers is good as then the car will ride evenly on all 4 wheels due to a common wheel diameter and bore size. 4) The new wheels are lighter and have a coned hub as well as a two layer outer hub. The sheer weight differential of the new wheel (2.6 gr. vs. 3.6 gr.) would beat out any advantage from having a premium matched "old" wheel set. 5) We will have machined sets of the new wheels this season as well which will eliminate any differentials or issues with wheel bore size, wheel circumference and the outer hub. I apologize for the length of the response but wait for the new wheels if you can, get the machined new wheels if your rules allow and you can wait get the 12's if you cannot wait for the new wheels Hope that helps! Thanks for the responses!
Darryl, I purchased a shaver from you a few weeks back so I "had to" purchase a few (3 dozen) wheels to start shaving. I guess you would say patience isn't one of my better qualities. By the way, my scout shop didn't have any 2009 wheels... I will keep checking.... Thanks for all of the information.

Thanks 5 Kids!!!!,
I checked for the umpteenth time today and not a single one of the scout shops in Houston had the new wheels. The closest one is an hour away so I'm calling them and asking for any white top plastic cases. Very frustrating. As soon as I get another set, I will send them to you. When is your race?

That's awesome Darryl.... I am finding that the derby community, no matter what board you are on, is a nice, generous bunch of people... Our pinewood derby isn't until mid-January. After some success last year the kids and I build a test track over the Summer. We started building "test" cars a couple weeks ago to work out the kinks. I hope we have enough time to get it right fivekidsracing

FiveKids,
I have been asking the local scout stores about the new wheels and decided that they have no clue. So I went to the primary Scout center here and bought two of the big rig kits and I now have 36 new wheels. PM me your address and I will send you 4. Sorry it took so long but I did not want to spend $38 on two big rigs just to take a risk on wheels but had to in the end.
Does anyone want a big rig kit with old wheels? HA! HA! ;D ;D

Hey Darryl!
I also picked up a big rig kit & three standard BSA kits the other day and everything had the new 2009 wheels! So as of right now I have 30 of the new wheels!! I actually bought the three BSA kits for my kids and was expecting to get some old style wheels so I was quite surprised when they were 2009 wheels.
So thanks for the wonderful offer it is very generous, but as of right now I have more 2009 wheels then I can handle.
Thanks again!
