Use a good primer. Apply several coats and sand in between each coat with 600 grit or better sandpaper. Make sure the primer, paint and clear coat are compatible with each other.

I use automotive glazing putty; not as brittle as wood putty after it dries and sands smoother. Available in any auto parts store or Walmart.

I use Minwax Polyurethane in a spray can just apply 2 coats as directed on can, lightly sand and then prime, wet sand, Paint and Clearcoat then wet sand and polish for a perfect finish. the Polyurethane acts as a sealer so the primer wont soak in to the wood. Hope that helps

I also use the Polyurethane method on my painted cars and it works very well. Lately I've be going the decal route on my league cars as it is a quicker process and after a light sanding, see Spacewalker's video on decal prep, and polish the caes come out silky smooth. Just my two cents.
