AGC,
There are various opinions on the exact wheelbase for a rail rider as far as best speed. It has nothing to do with the rail rider though. I believe all would agree that the rear wheels should be at the very back of the car. The difference of opinion comes with the front wheels. Most would say as would I that the best wheel base is the traditional extended wheel base. The only differing opinions are those that feel a shorter front wheel base is better as the angle of the car at the bottom of the ramp gives the weight in the rear of the car a fraction of a second longer on the hill if the wheel base is shorter. I understand the weight and angle part of the theory but I would not want to bet my life on the differential in time between that benefit and the benefit of stability from the front wheels farther forward. I know that doesn't answer your question as I do not have an answer; just wanted to bring up recent theories that make this a much harder question than it was just a year ago. For the rail rider, you still can't go wrong with the number of league racers that go with the extended wheel base when it is an option.
Terrific question though and I look forward to other opinions on this subject.
