This will allow you to turn the axle while in the wood. This allows you to tune the car. Most if not all the top league racers are using this groove. K House deserves a lot of credit for coming up with this idea, I know I use it on almost every car I make and that is a lot of cars.

OK, but just what is a K house groove? Can anyone describe it?

Is this a slot cut acrossed the axle head, in which a screwdriver can turn the axles?

I know this thread is a little old. But I first posted the cutting of the groove here on this fine forum. Then people started putting names to it. I think k-groove is a common name. Some have claimed they came up with it before me. If so it wasn't documented as in pictures or publicly posted. Some are making a profit off of it. I simply posted it free for all to see and use. Here is the original link. Just scroll down a bit to see the pictures. pinewoodp.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Wheels&action=display&thread=1746

Hi K, I have not purchased any commercial axles with the slot cut in the head.
I believe that my Son and I tried to cut the groove and were not good at performing the task at hand on a cub scout car.
We simply use a modified needle nose pliers to turn axles.
I have not cut a slot in the axles on my pro cars. I am more comfortable with the needle nose pliers.
I believe that once you get used to cutting the slot and leveraging the right screwdriver, the process of turning an axle might be efficient.
Thanks for your input! Murph

It's whatever works for you. On the new BSA wheels when the outer hub is coned the head of the axle sits too far in to grab it with pliers. Unless you pull the axle out, turn it then push it back in. The key is a steady hand and a follow through. Meaning once you start cutting keep steady pressure without letting up until your just deep enough. Don't worry if it's not exactly centered either. You can clamp the axle between two pieces of wood or use the axle press. But don't try to hold it because it gets real hot. Good racing to you!

5K, I didn't race last year because my business was in such a decline. Plus it seemed I hit a plateau without a track to tune on. I just got a job at Honeywell last Monday and need to try and recover before I start building again. I miss racing but I don't want to send in average cars. I need to buy a track first. I do however am constantly thinking of how to make fast cars. I can't get it out of my head!!!

khouse, We can teach you how to run fast times at PWDR. Just get that track and we can get you the information you need to build a fast car in a quick manner. It is coming to the end of the year and the 2011 season will fast approach. Murph SLT

I'm not a stranger to fast times. Tied for 6th my first year in modified in Utah my first year. Ran sub 3's with the heavy wheels in Pure stock. I really need a track to be in the top 5 consistantly. The other problem is I don't have enough room for a track either. So for now my cars and ideas are on blocks.....

Got it. It would be nice that a track would be about 10 feet long with respect to keeping the spouse happy! I have the same issue! Honestly, I have been racing for over a year and the pro times have dropped considerably. Pretty wild stuff. I have seen 5 Kids move the needle with respect to time reduction. I see the same in BSA Pinewood derby racing. I am a big promoter of Cub Scouts and Pinewood derby. My track travels all over the place to support Cub Scout Packs. In Cub Scouts, I have seen cars (not ours) that have been faster than the stock times at PWDR when normalized for timer differences. Naturally, there is some issues around potential rule breaking with these Cub Scout Cars that run these times. Additionally, a time like that I described, is an exception rather than the norm. Still it is eye opening. We need past racers like you to come back in the Pro and Cub Scout areas to support the initiative and build the next generation of leaders out of our Scouts. There are plenty of racers that might have you come over and race on their track. We are just creating small moments of joy racing small little cars that flat out "smoke" at all levels (Cub Scout and Pro) of racing! Come on back. We would be happy to have you! Murph

I can totally understand everything you are saying and I am sure there isn't an hour that goes by that I am not thinking about PWD. You are one of those guys that helped me a lot when I started and I am sure you helped many, many others. When you are ready to race again or just add to the discussions or join a race day chat you will be welcomed at the PWDR.

Thanks for the invites. BSB has been asking me to come race every month or so. As a contractor things were going South for a few years. I just felt bad when I bought axles, wheels, supplies, countless bottles and cans of every kind of lube. Then the entry fees and shipping. I was addicted- LOL. My house really isn't small. But even with the wife"s permission to cut a hole through one wall I can only muster up 34 feet . My garage is 24x24 and full of contractor stuff. Anyway when I can get back in I sure will.
