Well before this years PWD my son and I had a great time coming up with ideas for this years car. Last year, well lets just say we never made it to the finish line. I found this website and my wife got us the Pinewood derby speed secrets book and followed the first car to the letter. (as it was the only plan that was within our district rules.) Wouldn't ya know it, his car took second place in the den and second in the pack. He only lost 2 out of about 28 races. I was very suprised with the outcome of the car. We have been invited to participate in the District race at the end of the month. Speaking of the district race, is there anything anyone would suggest doing to the car to get it prepared for the districts? I even contimplated building another car. But this one is fast and my son did about 80% of the work on it. Here is a pic with his trophy. Bob

Thanks. I tell ya, our goal this year was to just make it to the finish line. ;D But to see his face when it won the first race...then the next...and the next. It was worth every moment. Plus I got a new drill press out of the deal. HEHE
BTW...we really wish there was a WIRL league in our area. My son would love to go see the "big dogs" race. Is there any wheres close to Corning, NY that the races are??

Looks like you and your son had a great time, way to go !! WIRL itself is located in Georgia, and that is where the proxy races are run each month. As far as live events, there are several throughout the year. The closest one to you is the North Coast Open which I'm helping host. It's located in Lorain, Ohio which is about a 5 hr drive from you (little over 300 miles) if I'm not mistaken. This is the closest live race that I know of.

Congrat's to your son and you and thanks for the kind words. That's what this is all about, helping father and son teams compete at their best.
My pinewood derby's are some of my fondest memories and I hope they will be you and your son's too!
Now share your new found wealth with a friend so we may make new friends too.

v8cj, Great job to father and son. Yes, one can learn a lot from the racers on this and other forums. Keep probing, reading, asking questions, etc. and you'll get better. I've learned so much in one year on this forum that at our pack race recently where my son killed the 2nd place car by 0.18 seconds which was hosted on my track I was standing around afterwards talking to someone about weight placement, axle polishing, etc. and suddenly I had several other people joining in to listen and I could tell by their expressions they were just amazed by the things I had to say. They were like "wow I never thought of that" . They were just like me exactly 1 year ago. However, I still have things to learn judging from my few WIRL race results. Oh, I agree with Mr. Parrish, you might want to relube after 28 races. HyperDrive

Congratulations v8cj and son,
Great job guys!
It sounds like you guys did a great job of building a fast car, and at the same time I think you may have hooked yourselves on Pinewood Racing.
It is fun to go to a live race where you can see fast cars race and talk to the guys who build them. You can also learn a lot from building cars and sending them to the league of your choice. You learn something every time, and your cars will get faster.
Congratulations and good luck at districts.
Phil
