I know that it was recommended that all wheels be matched by mold number on the older Cub Scout Derby Wheels. I have heard it is not as important now especially if you are going to work them with bore tools and a lathe, polishing, etc..........
Opinions on this?

You are correct, if you have the tools to correct the 5 correctable points on a wheel it will not matter if they are all different mold numbers. I am sure that many have mold matched for MANY years, but back in the summer of 04 Randy Davis of Max-V and I had a detailed conversation on mold matching, the benifits and from there his charts have become a industry standard. The old molds were just so worn and we expect the same in a few more years, we shall see. I do know now that mold matching has become such a hot topic that several packs around the country have been writing their race rules to have " Mold Matched Wheels will not be allowed" . Racer X
