Anyone try Krytox or teflon/wax coating on the metal axles? If you have had success with any of the spray on dri lubes, please let me know which is your favorite and how you applied and whether you mixed any of the available lubes.
Also, has anyone tried the baked on teflon/moly dri lubes used by gun owners?

I tried the brownwells teflon bake on teflon and had some axles sent out for professional teflon coating at high temp. Both were slower than expected. I had to sand the axles with 8000 grit to get them even close to the original speed. The dupont teflon dry wax is very good with krytox. It should be the standard you compare to. It works great on stock wheels, but not on light wheels. I suspect the wax overcomes the inertia of the light wheels. That's why many racers have gone to jig-a-loo silicone spray. It does great on the inertia light wheels and ultra-lights, and is very close to the teflon dry wax for precision stock wheels. Pony Express

DO NOT spray jig-a-loo in wheel bore it will eat the wheel up after polishing the wheel bore apply a good wax inside the wheel bore let dry over nite & buff out with cotten pipe cleaner, after polishing axles clean really good then spray evenly with jig & let dry 5to10 min. apply krytox to axle stick in wheel & your good to go

Good info guys!!
We have found that applied coatings seem to work better for higher load, much above Pinewood Derby. We went as far a while back to do some titanium nitride hard coated (TiN) axles, Jay from Warp Speed had one of the guys at Hendricks Motorsports do them for us, they looked un-believable but were of no advantage and were priced insane! The interesting thing is that they better be polished PERFECTLY because you are not going to polish them when once they are coated, that stuff is very hard.

Agreed, you need to polish the axles to perfection with particular attention paid to the axle/axle head interface. Some racers have said that you need to keep your axles a tad rough to allow graphite to embed in these micro-scratches. I don't agree with this ideology. Polish them to perfection! Murph SLT

What are jig-a-loo and Krytox. Our rules only allow for dry lubes...do this qualify? From my perspective, if they are dry at race time, then they are a dry lube. Thanks!
