My son had his first pinewood derby this week. He and I spend many many hours building. We tuned his car to be a rail rider but when our track was set up, we discovered that there were no center rails! I was shocked. The track used side rails instead. Needless to say, it slowed our car considerably since it was now riding with the non dominate wheel and probably the back wheel as well against the side rail instead of the inside of the dominate wheel alone. Still, even with this hinderance, my son took second place. How common are tracks without center rails? Thanks!

My son, Shawn, had to run on a plastic track several years ago. He set his car up for a straight runner with one of the front wheels not touching the track.
His car tracked very well and was fast. He got beat by a car that was 0.40 seconds faster than him on a 48" track.
We would sooner run on a track with a center rail but these tracks, without center rail, are challenging and still fun to race on! Murph
