I am working on a thin design and would love some input on the order of the steps. We are required to use slots. Here is my best guess:
Bake the wood Cuts slots Prepare Slots (memory retention) Shape the Wood Drill weight compartments Route out the wood/hallow the body Add weights Sand Liquid-penetrating wood hardener for strength Paint
Thanks,
Jim

Ninja,
I would highly recommend that you hollow out the body for the weights BEFORE you shape the body. I have done it both ways and it is much easier to hollow out when you have the entire block to work with.
Just FYI

agree.. no compromise here.. you can keep the body more secure while it's square....
I, too, have done this....

Thanks guys. I've been reading the boards for a while now and am going to try and send in a stocker and a modified this Spring. Look for "Ninja Racing"--my 3 boys named it that. They will be helping me on the cars, so we'll win no matter how we place.

To further the discussion... You have "bake the wood." I have heard people talk about baking and applying wood hardener. Why bake? And isn't wood hard enough? Precision

Baking the wood is used to remove whatever moisture is left within the pine... moisture equals weight.

OK... So explain how to bake properly. Preheat to 425, slap in the oven for 15 minutes? When the timer rings, mmmmmm, smell that aroma!! The smell of a champion. ;D

SSsnake,
I really like "Roller Derby". One thing is for sure, you don't leave out any possibilities when you build a car. We just thought we had considered everything. I love it, love it, love it!!!!!!!!!
Send "Roller Derby II" in next month. I would like to see how it does.
Good Luck and welcome back.
Phil
