Here at Derby Worx we get a LOT of e-mail about B.S.A. Pinewood Derby racing rules. Many people think there is a standard set of rules for all packs but there is not. While many feel that the instructions in the box are the rules, they are more of a helpful guideline to get you started and keep you in the ballpark of the basic rules.
Each district (if they have a championship final) or pack usually has their own written rule set that is put together by their leaders or round table. We find this in most cases the best way to do things because it gears the rules towards the demographics of the group, some more rules, some less rules, but in most cases everyone has a slightly different set and for this you need to read them carefully when choosing how to construct the car with your child.
The basics remain the same: 7" long max length (the full length of a standard block) somewhere between 2.5" & 3" tall (for finish line clearance) and a max weight of 5 oz. from here we have seen everything from 3 or 4 more simple things for the complete rule set to the strictest of rules that scrutinize every aspect of the entire car and we have to say: THAT'S NOT FUN!
Here at Derby Worx we want to say: KEEP IT FUN! make the rules something everyone can understand and live with. Leave some room in there for the boys to experiment and learn as the years progress. Don't fret over those that may spend a little more as we know so well, a properly built car can beat an expensive car anyday.
We want to open this up to everyone to share their rules, not to judge or dissect the rules you have been given but to let us here help you interpret them for maximum racing fun for you and your child.
