My Son and I just completed his first Pinewood Derby car for his Cub Scout pack event .. Despite many obvious mistakes with the car .. (we only gave ourselves a couple of days to design, research and build the car ) .. Specs : Stock wheelbase Polished axles ( probably over done ) Stock wheels ( no work whatsoever ) 5 oz. race weight Graphite lube Decals were cut on a vinyl plotter Paint Dupli Color If I recall correctly the track was a 42ft ‘best track’ The car did ok running upper 3.1s and very very low 3.2s 2nd fastest cumulative time after 140+ heat races 3rd fastest car on the day From a field of over 60 cars Then the finals come ( 7 fastest cars ) and the car placed 5th overall running nothing faster then I believe a 3.24 .. The car looked like it really lost a step in the finals ... what slows them down so much ? One its very last heat races before the finals was a 3.17 ...

Obvious mistakes , that's a great looking car !! I wish our first car would have ran/looked that good ;D. Congrats to you and your son for a job well done !! As far as the car slowing down, sounds like the graphite was running out. Most graphite cars get 6-8 good heats before they need re-lubing or start seeing a slowdown (obviously every car is different). So unless you were allowed to re-lube before the finals I'd say that was the problem. Lucky 13

Lucky 13 … thank you for your kind words … the mistakes I was referring to were total ignoring any sort of wheel prep … and very little consideration given to weight bias ... that sort of stuff .. As for re lube were not allowed to touch the cars during the event
