I have a question that hopefully someone will be willing to respond to. In our Cub Scout PWD, the only rule about the wheels is that we must use BSA wheels. It does not restrict any modifications.
What I'm thinking about trying is to narrow the width of the wheel tread. Maybe to about 1/2 or 1/3 width. Has anyone tried this? Did it work or make things worse?
If you have any information, please share. Thanks.

you're lucky...
I've said this before... "It's not was they say you CAN do, it's what they don't say you CAN'T do". Take every advantage you can, because others will also...
Don't cut the treads too thin, otherwise you'll cause the hub to bind against the axle too much... Try a few different width's. On my Awana wheels, I found the happy medium to be 50%. They smoke!

Why cut the width? H cut the wheel.

Just hollow out the inside of the wheels and make them lighter so they still look stock from the outside, That way when you tech your cars in, it won't look like you did anything... If you make the wheels thinner, then people will ask to many questions ...

Thank you for your information and suggestions. I'm kind of leaning toward a combination of the ideas. Slightly narrowing, hollow out the inside and then H cut. Others have H and V cut their wheels, and other mods, it's not uncommon in our pack for modified wheels so I don't think there will be many questions.
Here is another part of what I'm doing. This car is for the adult class for racing and show and follows the same rules as for the scouts. I'm doing a rendition of Swamp Rat 18 - the first SR I saw race in person and Big Daddy won that day! So I'm trying to have at least the illusion of skinny wheels in the front, but don't want the wheels to bind either. I can put on show wheels after it's all over, but we have to race what we show for the competition of both.

If you make the wheels thinner, then people will ask to many questions ... what is the best method for hollowing out the inside of the wheels. I practiced on one by chuck the wheel on a mandrel and using some sand paper, but looked to me like i was melting more than sanding.
