So what's the best procedure for sanding wheel treads to remove the mold mark (and not mess up teh wheel in th eprocess)? I'm talking dremel or drill with a mandrel. No lathes. I've seen mention of using 600 grit wet paper. Is that good, and how do you keep it 'square' while sanding? I'm worried about doing more harm than good if we just hold the paper in our fingers. TIA!

If you have a drill press use a square block...metal or wood. we actually use a LEVEL laying flat for the squared edge. Keep the paper wet and monitor the amount of time you use. Use only slight pressure.

Earlier before the superbowl I just helped my nephew do a set of wheels. We used the head off a 2 piece square laying on it's side, much like Joe's level. We start with 320 paper all the way up to 12000 micro-mesh. Keep it wet or wheel will melt. The wheels we did are not perfect but they are as good as you can get without latheing. What is ironic is that my lathe was on the bench right beside the drill press. But rules do not allow it so we did not use it!
