I am new to this and have a question about axel play/size. I have just finished preping one axel, I filed off the burrs, and then sanded with four different sand papers ending with 2500. The wheel now feels like it has more play or is to lose on the axel. Will this have a negative effect or did I do something wrong.

I am sort of new/old to this like you are. I just got bac k into this when my grandson just started cubs this year. It seems that you may have over polished them a bit.Your allignment is going to have to be perfect as well as wight placement. Seems to me the less play you have in them the better. For example go spin your toilet paper on the roll and take a look at the play you get and magnify that times 4 at relative ppeeds over 200mph if you get that fast. Seems to me it's just to much room for lube. I'm sure that some of the master builders on this sight might be able to help you better than I but I would start over and size your axles with tools from the owner of this message board. Go and buy multiple wheels from your scout store or other supplier and mold match them. They are all numbered and conservatively polish them and size them with the Pro Axle tool from Derby Worx for a start. Good luck and maby others will help you more. Jim

Search DerbyTalk.com for "mechanical trail" and you will get a lot of engineering info.
In short you over did it. This is a case where "less is more, but not enough is worse" really comes into play.
I am confident that I have the axel prep down, but we are not allowed to touch the wheels, so that is where we will probably loose by at least .2 when we enter a car next month.
