I usually just lurk, but I have to add my 2 cents. I love the design of roller derby. It is great to see someone think outside the box. But if the rollers are considered wheels and they are made out of metal, doesn't that violate the wheels cannot be made out of metal rule ?

It's Race Week... so: time for another "thought provoking" question!!!
Sorry Warp Speed, but you are DQ'd since you answered last week's question. Also, NONE of you answered part two: a PWD wheel spins about as fast as a drill motor!!! WOW!!! Is this exciting or WHAT!!!
The burning question: Every car travels the same distance down the WIRL track to the finish: 37 feet. How far does the axle travel along the bore (the inside diameter of the "hole") of the wheel? This time there is a prize of 1,000 WORTHLESS points to the first one answers the question. Answers stating any reasonable assumption/estimation is accepted.
Since we have to have a Part Two: what is the speed the the axle travels on the bore? There is an additional bonus of 5,000 WORTHLESS points if'n you get this right and you lose 2,000 points if'n you don't anwer, or answer it incorrectly.
Sorry, those are the rules; I make them up as I go along; sort of like a PWD "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" The questions are made up... and the points don't matter.
I almost forgot: Warpo gets 50,000 points for last week's answer since he was the only one who took it seriously.

(PHIL, I believe the dimension from contact side of start pin to center finish line hole is 400.125. They are now using largest finish line hole so I think you add 3 in. to this dimension. Fred )

I was told that the actual distance of the race is 403.125". That equals 33'-7 1/8"
Hopefully the bore travels on the axle, not the axle on the bore. Sometimes I'm not too sure which one my cars do.
My estimate is that the bore travels 31.5" on the axle.
That's a 1.216 dia. wheel with a .095 bore dia.
That's at a whopping .579mph on a 3 second run.
What do you think?

For answering both parts correctly, you are awarded 7,000 points!
However...
In the true spirit of the Olympics, a scoring controversy is required (and my second cousin twice removed on my mother's side is French Canadian...)
Therefore, punitive deductions are mandatory so: for inconsistent units (miles, inches; hours and seconds) the judges penalize you ONE FULL point.
For trying the judges' patience in pointless argumentation about whether the axle travels on the bore, or the bore travels on the axle ANOTHER FULL point. (It's irrelevant; the speed is relative).
Since there was insufficient information given to calculate the instantaneous speed (oops...) , the judges award 501 additional points for technical merit and 12 points for artistic impression.
Current point standings:
Warp Speed 50,000 slkrnsntracing 7,511
The judges have also reviewed a petition from a left wing political organization calling itself Concerned Racers Against Math Problems and "Stuff" (C.R.A.M.P.S) and issue the following proclamation: Calculations carried out to meaningless precision are not required for further competition and may be penalized depending on the wind speed and phase of the moon.
Congratulations to all who participated; we have lovely parting gifts for you on your way out.

It's RACE WEEK!!!
And we all know what that means...?
For this installment of "Whose Race Is This Anyway", we are trying a new format called: "SO WHAT?" It's the "Applied Science" portion of the party.
Last month, Phil did a wonderful job of calculating the speed of the wheel bore relative to the axle and the total distance. It's slow, and the bore doesn't travel very far on the axle. Until the next race, everyone is invited to explain why this bit of PWD technical info affects (or, conversely, does not affect) the speed of a Wood Car.
So... the competition for this month is open to all respondants; everyone wins!!! Points are awarded on participation and technical merit. Extra points will be awarded for building or debating someone else's post. The competition last until the next race (or until everyone loses interest...)
One word of caution: minimal points are awarded for trivial post, e.g.: "every little bit counts" and "It's obvious.." will not garner many points.
Good Luck to all; we are looking forward to many interesting discussions.

I would like to pose a question set for April: Part 1: What is the quickest time possible on the WIRL track? Part 2: What is the general formula to determine minimum times for any given height, flat length, and total distance. I would suggest that the following assumptions be made to keep it simple: A. Zero energy loss during the run. B. The slope is constant from starting pin to flat section. C. g is rounded to 9.8m/s/s From prior post, distance traveled is real close to 403 inches. I found the following in history: Finally, we have the track dimensions: Distance from rear of starting peg to finish sensor: start sections: 76.5 in Curved section: 41 in flats: 21 ft finish section: 74" ====== Total 36 ft, 11.5 in ----------------------------- Start height: (Track surface at rear of start pin): 46.5 in Height at start of curved section: 12.5 in Track surface height at finish sensor: 3 1/8 in Extra points could be for relating astm specs for cof/various lubes to surfaces. Also the effect of a change in mass and other statements of relationships in assorted equations would be worth bonus points. . . Massive points for a full FEA study with associated thermal, friction, stress, air flow and velocity in a cool video.

Cool video. Great Job! Are you going to plan on making these 1.2g Edge Super Stockr' wheels available to the general public any time soon?
I'd certainly give them a try if they'll help get me closer to the 3 second barrier.
