(Probably best answered by Derby Master or Mike Parrish). A lot of people are emailing me asking me what the wheels are that cars like Slingshot, Red Rooster and Mean Streak are sporting... I will let one of them answer the question. Mostly they want to know if there is a place to buy them or how they can get some.

First of all, to John at Pinewood Performance, and others who contributed, thanks for the new board. Can't get enough discussion and input when you get really interested (addicted?) in pinewood cars and going faster.
Here are my .2 cents about the thin tires. I read in earlier posts that it is important to center the tire over the hub to achieve balance and to avoid hub twisting and binding. BSA tires have no hub on the outside, although I think someone said the Royal Ranger tires might.
In another thread, someone suggested to cut down the hub to help with this binding issue. My question is that if you shorten each tire hub say 1/8", then you are 1/4" closer to the center rail (two tires on front or back). Does this present a problem, i.e. more contact with the rail?
I am going to try and cut some wheels this week-end? Wish me luck and hope I hang onto all my fingers.

I have heard that too, I am not sure if I agree. I keep them as is, so does pinewoodfreespeed. I ran a 3.177 at WIRL. I will have to make a few sets with the hub cut down an let you guys know.

Shortening the hub reduces binding. Being closer to the rail reduces the distance your car travels down the track. If alignment is right the reduced hubs are faster. Let me clarify, picture a slalom course, the closer you follow a centerline the shorter distance you travel. A wider wheel base allows for wider "s's" as the car corrects after collisions with the rail. Sssnake

I have not played with any narrow or s as of yet, but working with different wheels when developing the Pro Tool line I have found that the B.S.A. wheel is the most balanced stock wheel.
The tread surface of the B.S.A. wheel is in direct line with the hub surface. The recess on the inside of the hub makes this work out. This was the only wheel that I found with this chacteristic. I would think if you are going to narrow the tread face you would want to reduce the hub the same and replace some of the hub recess proportionatly.
The tread and hub both are about .300" in stock form.

The wheels used on Mean Streak are Royal Ranger wheels. The quality of the ones I purchased were not as good as the BSA wheels. I have not tried the s yet, but will soon. ;D

I am going to call in some Royal Ambassador wheels this afternoon, I'll let you know how well they machine! BSA Wheels are a snap to machine down, I heard the Royal Ranger tires were too soft.
