Does anyone know where to get Tungsten Bars or Rods, 3/8 diameter? All I can find are the small pieces.
Thanks

Octom, Go to www.tungsten.com or email Kevin Anetsberger [kevin@tungsten.com] this guy from that company. I have bought the 3/4" and 1" diameter rod from him in 1 foot lengths that I cut to size. I was quoted a 1/4" dia. x 12" rod (17gr/cc) at $35.50 and 1/2" x 12" rod at $87.25 back in July. So 3/8" dia. is somewhere in the middle. Good luck, HyperDrive

I did find them at Eagle Alloys. What did you use to cut it Hyperdrive? I use a metal cutting carbide blade. I wanted to find a 70.5" band saw blade to fit my craftsman but, had no luck in that quest. I checked out Eaglealloys but, they were way too expensive for my blood. HyperDrive

LOL, I checked out Eagle Alloys and at $141.00 per 12" I was wondering if there were some gold mixed in. For a 3/8'' X 12" www.tungsten.com ran $55 per rod plus shipping. I figure that might be enough for 3 cars so about $20 per car for weights. I have been using steel rods from Home depot at $6 per 3' rod. I think I might just stick with that for now. ;D

Eagle is much more expensive. I know it's kind of shell shock but, there is a very good reason the top builders use W. 95% W alloy is around 17gr/cc. Steel is around 7.85gr/cc. See the advantage? If you don't want to spend the money for W that's understandable but, I would use Lead (11.34gr/cc) instead of steel. Still a lot more advantageous than steel and it's cheap. You can buy lead fishing weights from all kinds of places in different sizes or easily melt it into the shape you want. HyperDrive

Steel Has other advantages over lead. It adds to body strenght in the design that I've used. I have a car (stock) that ran 3.014 on a 40' Piantdosi Aluminum track with the steel bars incorporated. I'm wondering how that will translate to a Best Track and might just send it in to WIRL to see.
Maybe I'll get some Tungsten for my cars but the steel should be good for pack racing.

Oh yeah, Just ordered me another tungsten bar yesterday, 7/8" diameter this time. In the long run, it's a lot cheaper than buying those 3/8" cylinders from various derby suppliers. However, there is nothing wrong with the 3/8" cylinders, I do have 3 sets of them myself. ;D ;D ;D Now if I can just learn how to do alignments HyperDrive

I have found tungsten weights at thingys Sporting Goods and Bass Pro Shops. All different diameters and weights. Becareful at the sporting goods stores. Some weights are 50% tungsten and some are 95%. I used some last year, depends on car designs. The cars the kids designed last year these weights would fit. This year the cars have a lower profile so it will be plates and cubes.

Sometimes it will say on the package what percent weight of W it is.

I have 1" Diameter 99.95% 19.1 g/cm Pure Tungsten Discs available in the following sizes and weights:
Thickness ---------- Weight
1/2" -------------- 4.28 oz. (Actually slightly less than 1/2" thick)
7/16"-------------- 3.94 oz.
3/8"---------------- 3.35 oz.
11/32" -------------- 3.10 oz.
These are better than 3/8" cylinders. The weight is more concentrated than you could ever achieve with 3/8" cylinders. Try fitting 8- 3/8" (4 oz) Tungsten cylinders into a space that is 1" diameter by less than 1/2" tall (4.28 Oz). The low height of the discs also helps to keep the weight low. They are very easy to install. Drill a 1" hole, drop them in, adjust the height and glue.
They are also better than 95% Tungsten rod, as these are 99.95% so they are more dense (19.1 g/cm) therefore the weight is more concentrated. ( More weight into a smaller size) There is nothing more compact and as dense as these available unless you try Osmium or Rhenium which would be very expensive. No cutting necessary just pick the weight you need. PM me if you are interested. Thanks.
