I would just like to say that the paint stencils from derbydoc are awesome. They can take you from no skill in painting to having a cool looking car and are simple to use. I also could not say enough good about his customer service and ease of working with. Thanx again.

Their easy to use, and you can even use them with spray cans. Currently there are 14 designs, but their will be up to 6-10 more designs coming soon. derbydoc.com/stencilnew.htm

I wonder if I use some aluminum or tin sheet metal (.008" to .016" thick) to cover the top of a car if the stencils would work with it when I spray a candy color on the metal, or should it be clearcoated before sprayed? I would think that candy colors and flames would be very vivid with actual metal shining underneath.

Roosclan, No need to add any metal or tin to your car with candy colors. Just make sure you use a good silver or gold base and apply the candy right over them !! Here is a picture of a car I recently painted using one of DerbyDocs new stencils.

I know about using silver or gold, but I was just curious if it will give a more "real" car look if the candy is over shiny metal (maybe even metal foil to save weight!). It'll be an interesting experiment at least. Sheesh. faded colors and everything! I don't know if I'll ever reach that level of airbrushing skill. Did you paint the purple over the entire center (including the crossing stencil) and then spray just the thinner one with green? I just bought some Createx paints for the boys and I to practice with. Transparent colors: forest green, deep blue and deep red, and some pearl white and pearl blue. I have some silver and gold paint already. Once we get pretty good, I'll look at some Auto-Air paints or Kustom Paints for the cars.

Roosclan, I painted the green on the zig zag part first because it is the lighter color. Then painted the swoosh purple and then used the purple for the shading. Truthfully it is very easy to do. I'm far from any type of painting expert, the DerbyDoc stencils make it very easy to make a nice looking car. Good choice in the Createx paints. They are my favorite to use right now. Easy clean up, good selection and easy to spray.

I will vouch for the quality of the DerbyDoc stencils. I've probably done at least 6 cars with them and they reall do make it easy. I've not gotten into the airbrush thing yet- rattle cans only. The only thing that I would point out is that you need to be careful if using acrylic + the type of primer (if any). Overall, the stencils are really great to work with and the results are impressive. You will get...."how did you do that!"

I plan on using either Kustom Kolor by HoK (acrylic polyester), Createx, or AutoAir, which are all basically acryllic and water-based. Also, what is the issue with primer? If I use a lacquer primer, won't it work for any other paint I put on top of it?
