This image was taken from the New Wheels thread in Ask the Pros. I have some questions regarding the process of removing the extra step found in the new wheels. I own the hub shaver but do not have the new wheels yet. While RacerX may be the only member to do it and could answer these questions, your insight is appreciated. 1) Would the hub shavers instructions remain the same where one hand holds the pro hub tool and the other hand holds the wheel? I've never removed as much material using the hub shaver so I figure a vise to hold the hub tool would be handy. 2) Roughly, how many revolutions are needed to remove the step? 3) Aside from periodically checking to see if the step is completely removed, what can be done to help ensure the same amount of material remains for each wheel? I don't know if using digital calipers to measure the depth of the step would be accurate enough. Maybe there are micrometers to measure the distance from the inside hub to the remaining step.

Those are some good questions !! I think Racer-X is out of town right now, so it may take a few days for you to get some answers !!

Ok, here is the method.
First, you might want to sharpen your Pro Outter Hub Shaver. Using a fine file or honing stone, in one direction, on the half circle top portion of the tool file or hone so the cutting edge (straight edge) is slightly higher then the round side. This gives the cutting edge a new crisp edge. This cut is a little more agressive than the tool was origionally set up for so a little sharper edge is needed.
Next, using the tool as normal, cut the upper ledge out until it meets the lower edge. Cut a little, then inspect, recut as necessary, you are looking to move the point of contact to the inner edge of the hub bore like the old wheel. You do not want to go any deeper because this will shorten your hub.
As far as a true measurement, we have experimented with a few things including a brake rotor mic with pointed anvils. It is hard to get a repeatable reference point from mulitple molded parts from numerous mold pockets and so far we don't see this as being as critical measurement to performance or as signifficant as removing the ledge.

Is there any way to order a Pro-Outer Hub Shaver that has been adjusted/honed/dressed to cut the new wheels step? Since I need to order one, might as well ask if they have been adjusted for the new wheels, one less thing for me to mess up.

With the new wheels becoming the standard, I was thinking that they might have changed the setup on the tool. The tool is ready to go out of the bag. We extended the reach of the step to do both the new B.S.A. wheel and the Pine Car Wheel. Sorry for the delay in answering this, I do not read the forum daily especially durring season, PLEASE always feel free to e-mail me at: Racerx@Derbyworx.com or just click on the big button on the front page of www.derbyworx.com that says "e-mail Derby Worx". Thanks Racer X

The B.S.A. now shows this in the new winter catalog for 2010.
They are adopting more of what we (the racers) are doing in the main stream as acceptable.
