Hey guys, If anybody has been working on your little scouts cars, or Awana, RA, etc. feel free to post a picture of them here. We always enjoy seeing the kids cars each year. Also feel free to ask questions about anything relating to The big project that your child and you are working on. There are plenty of guys around here that love to talk pinewood derby and we will all help in any way we can.Ill actually kick start this thread with a pic of my nephews car. Weve been working on 3 and will choose the fastest for his race. Can you tell that he likes red?

Lucky13, If you don't mind me asking, what width are you using for themiddle and around the axle slots of your cars?
That is similar to a design my son wants to try, but we (more me than him) are concerned that with the stop section on the track our pack uses (about 24 " max box type stop - psuedo balistic) taht we may experience breakage if we go too thin in those areas.
We usually hit the backstop andrecoil backwards to the incline on a 32' track.
TIA
Rich

The very front (nose area) tapers down to about 1/16 so if you have a rough stop section the thinner front may not handle it to well. It sounds like you may want to talk to the Pack about redoing the stop section. We have a foam stop section and last year we took a couple old sweatshirts and tied them to the end, it stopped the cars perfect. Recoiling clear back to the incline is crazy, the cars are probably getting knocked all out of whack !! Lucky 13

They rent the track as they don't have the funding to even think about buying/building one. I was actually more interested in what the left to right dimension is. I already know we can't thin out the nose too much, don't want the car getting shorter after each run. Yes the stop section is horrendous. My son's car two years ago had a rear wheel sheered off as he hit the backstop and recoiled just as the car in the next lane got to the finish line (he was far ahead). Firmly beleive that it cost him district that year. That and them changing the track setup between ranks. That's another horror story. We'll definitely be at Lorain again and if I can build a sturdy shipping container, we'll probably send in a car or two before then. We haven't started building yet for this year, just started the planning/drawing stage. I always help steer him in his designs to make sure it's something that he can do most of the work on. And he always comes up with some outragous idea that I have to build for me (to complicated for him so I won't let him race it as his if he doesn't do most of the work) My sons loves the designs like your using, just trying to figure out if we can do it without it breaking again. Thanks and we'll see you out there on the track again I'm sure, Rich

Rich, Sorry about that, I miss understood you. The thinest section is right before the front axles. It is 1/2 inch wide. The nose is almost 3/4 inch wide. The rest of the body is just the standard 1 3/4 inch BSA block width. Unfortunately the North Coast Open will probably not happen this year. We just bought a house in Kentucky and will be moving within the next 3 months or so. It's alright though, once we get settled in down there don't be surprised to see the "Bluegrass Open" ;D !!

Thanks Lucky.
Good luck with the move. Sorry to hear about the North Coast.
Kentucky might be too much of a drive, but you never know.
