I've had an idea for about three years now of creating a carbon fiber shell out of one of the body shapes that I have used in previous years. The pinewood block would give me the basic shape, then my thought is to use that as the mold basis. From there, I'm thinking a three layer layup of CF to form a tub, where I will place all the weight in the back (maybe a little bit in the nose, not sure yet, of course). What I'm really not sure of, though, is how to create a lid that will go over the tub. I'm thinking I can use the same plug, flipped over, to create a shell lid. Three layers of CF on the edges of the lid mold would give enough space to slip this into the tub. For the axles, I'm thinking two strips of wood running horizontal to the direction of travel, then epoxied into the tub, would be enough for the axles to grip into, once I drill through the CF into the wood.
Has anyone ever seen or heard of anything like this? Or, has anyone ever done anything at all with carbon fiber? Am I nuts for even thinking about trying this in the first place?

Sounds like an interesting project, any progress on it yet?

No progress yet. Life (assistant coach on my older son's lacrosse team) got in the way. Now that lax season is done, it's time to start cranking before pinewood season comes again.
