Phoneman,
Stay with it. If your times are low 3 seconds or under you're doing good. My son just won his district pwd and I am still trying to get him under 3 seconds. He ran four seperate heats at 3.028 sec., 3.0365 sec., 3.038 sec. , and another 3.0276. The track was horibbly bad., probably about 15yrs. or so old. He dropped his car at his pack pwd and bent 3 of four axles,(good speed axles that we got from Mike Parrish), but we straightned them and totally rebuilt the car over again. We always rub grafite on the wheels. Don't know if it helps. Hang in there.

Phoneman, Believe me, I understand. Last year my son and I won his Wolf bracket, but came in fourth in the derby. The winner had a very impressive looking car. This year, the same kid once again had an impressive car that used all the speed tricks we had learned. After the derby, I was shocked to find a car identical to his for sale on the internet! But, this time we beat him and won the derby...by spending two months building our car together, having some great father/son time, and learning a lot about derby car physics. We spent a lot of time adjusting our weight and aligning the axles. Our number one focus was on mirror polishing the axles and working over the wheels to perfection. (Racer X has some great tools!) We then sealed both in bags with graphite-moly for about a week, working in the lube every day. My son is in hog heaven and looking forward to the regionals.
