Alright, I think I know the answer to this but, I'm going to ask it anyways!! My sons BSA derby is soon. The track they use is an older wood 32ft track. It has a long continuous drop then a short flat before the end. The track is in good shape but no where near the shape of a good aluminum track. How aggressive should I be on the weight placement? Any info would be helpful. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, Lucky
Our Pack and District use the same type of Track. We have found that at 1-1/4" to be a perfect weight placement. This affords some leeway in the event there is some imperfection in the track set up. Sometimes they won't take the time to assure that there are no gaps or elevation in corrections on the track. He's taken two packs and 1 district in the past with this set up.

Thanks j2ce, I figured a less aggressive weight placement was needed, just wasn't sure how much. Sounds like you and your son have it figured out!! I took over as derby chair this year for our pack. I was hoping a new track would be in the cards but we spent a lot of money on a new enclosed trailer. Maybe next year. One problem in our district is that the district race uses a new aluminum style track. I may have to set the car up so that we can move the weights back a little farther before the district race.

Lucky,
Seems that your running the show. Have the guys take the time to get as perfect a setup as possible. If you can run cars smoothly down the track then your son can get a little more aggressive on the weight placement down to 1". Now your boy's car will be ready for District as well. Good luck to you and your boy.

In placing you weights do you need to put any in front of the 1-1/4" or around the front wheels? Or is it just best to keep the weight contained in the rear of the car?
Just wondering,

Just wondering, The 1" or 1- 1/4" weight placement referrers to the C.O.G (center of gravity), we run on an old wooden track and have no problem with a 1" in front of the rear wheels C.O.G. The weight should be concentrated in the back as much as allows to get the proper C.O.G. I hope this makes sense.
