I was reading in another post that you can "over polish" the tread surface and cause the car to "slide" down the track instead of "roll". Makes sense, but was curious about any on track experience with it...any thoughts?
Last year while helping my boys prep their wheels, being a rookie and all, we burnt up a few wheels not taking into account the "heat buildup" factor while polishing the tread...LOL too much pressure on the wheel and poof she started to melt... ah well, trial and error taught some good lessons i suppose on what to do and what NOT to do...
I put some moly blend onto a very soft cloth and spun the wheel up in a mandrel and layed a cloth gently against the tread surface to rub it in for a few secs.
worked well, wheels looked smooth and ready to go...I don't recall using sandpaper to smooth the tread surface before applying the graphite, guess I was afraid I would cook it and cause the wheel to come out of square if I wasn't careful enough...But, just as a tip what I came up with was, to prep the surface tread for the graphite rub in was to spin up the wheel and gently lay a tube of jewelers rouge (don't recall what kind) against the tread to fill in the microscopic irregularities and then buffed it off with another clean soft cloth. Was nice and "shiny" to say the least, lol
Well, again....thanks for all the tips and hope I can return the favor. After the boy's scout race at the end of the month I am looking forward at a possible entry into the WIRL stock div. beginners luck may prevail
