This is a two part question:
We're getting ready for our district PWD. The car that qualified was aligned using the shim system. That worked well but required me to remove the right front axle several times. Eventually, the axle hole enlarged and now the axle does not have a tight fit.
Any suggestions on the best way to rectify this?
What alignment technique do you prefer?
Thanks

A little water will swell the wood but will require you to rework your alignment for that wheel/axle. I would get some Super Glue GEL and glue that axle in place provided your alignment is where you want it. Alignment Technique: The RacerX alignment technique! (click to view wheel canting) Bend, rotate to tune.

srob, congrats on alignment with the shim system, how many shims did it take on average per axle hole and what material did you use for the shims? Do you know about drilling glue holes perpindicular to the axle holes? I used the same bit that came with my pro body tool and drilled holes on the bottom of the car where I calculated the tapered end of the axles would sit. Once the holes are drilled and the axles with wheels are positioned I placed a small drop of CA glue (crazy/super glue) in the hole. I did it one hole at a time and allowed the glue to dry for a few minutes. Initially I tilted the car slightly and very briefly so the glue would run a tad up the axles inside the axle hole. However, 99% of the time the wheel side is held higher while drying so glue doesn't reach the wheel. It ended up taking 8 shims behind the right front axle. The shims were 1/8 inch strips of wax paper. This was a moving target. Sometimes 8 was not enough and 9 was too much. I went up and down the scale from 4 shims to 16 shims before it was where I wanted it. I don't think I'll use the shim method again. It is too much work and time consuming and I'm not sure that the results are any better than bending the axle at the proper location. The shim process eventually enlarged the axle hole. Yes... I've recently started drilling holes and gluing the axles after they're set. Thanks, Steve
