They're going to have an outlaw race at my sons district race this year and I'm going to build a needle axle car for it. This is my 1st attempt using needle axles and need some advice. I'm going to use piano wire and would like to know the ideal size to use. I have .035-.040 sizes to choose from. Also, what are people using on the ends of the axle for a head and where can you get them?
Thanks in advance

Hey Mountaineer:
I'm no expert on needle cars, but I can tell you that the Derby Worx RSN wheels are the industry standard for needle axles, and the stock bore is approximately .039. Personally, If you are using DW RSNs then I'd stick with the .035 wire, but you could go as high as .036. I have two needle axle cars. Both use Derby Worx RSN wheels with stock bores. One has .035 axles the other .037, and the one with .035 is faster. As far as holding the wheels on. Many builders use ear ring back. The sort of domed shaped ones. You can get them at Walmart. A package of 20 will set you back $3.00.
Hope this helps.
