I see the bore of the needle hubs are .040 inches. What is the diameter of the axles. I want to know the clearance. I want to build some needle wheels but don't have a clue on how to turn them? I have the pro arbor but you know it's twice as big as the needles. I can't find any bushings that will work either. I'm fighting the urge to just buy the stinking things! I want to build the entire car myself. If I do ever win a race I want to say I built the whole thing. Maybe I'll have a weak moment and just order the wheels and axles............................... Anybody else feel like that?

The needle axles that come with the Derbyworx RSN's, and SSN's are .034 in diameter. Ive used as big as .036 sewing needles, but the .034 needles are a good fit. I like your idea of doing the whole car yourself, even the wheels. Good luck

Khouse, One can use piano wire for the axles with earring backs for the stops. You can get piano wire (hobbyists often refer to it as music wire) at some local hobby shops. Get the 1/32" diameter. I applaud your effort to build from scratch. However, I know a couple of good places to buy wheels should you be in need. 2 good examples are below: www.derbydoc.com/www.derbydominator.com/ (Adding additional wheel options in the next week) The owner of DerbyDoc knows what he's doing when it comes to the modifieds. The owner of the other is going to take the tungsten weight and wheels off his first try and put them on another car. The body of his modified might be for sale by the way if it ever gets to the finish line. It started Saturday night. It has a really ugly paint job, graphite stains and a strong desire to go slowly to the wrong side. But, it should come in handy in the winter for firewood. Probably burn faster than it raced.

Hey Khouse, Try these three web site for raw material to make your wheels. They have Delrin and Teflon rounds. Also have round stock that you could make bushing out of to convert larger bore to needle bore. 5 thousands is the # I have heard for difference in wheel bore and axle, and if you are going fabricate your own stuff don't limit yourself to 40 thousands on wheel bore. Why wouldn't a 20 thousand bore and 15 thousands music wire combo work? Smaller is Faster! www.mcmaster.comwww.mscdirect.comwww.smallparts.comSee ya Scott Beakerboys

Beaker, I already buy from those companies and they all are great. I think Mcmaster Carr has the best website. I had the same thought on making tiny axle bores. I was wondering about the hardened wire. It could be considered a spring if one was to start winning races if the rules were pushed? What do you think?

Khouse, I don't think they would consider it a spring, but in my opinion any spring action you would get from an axle would hurt a lot more than it would help. Phil

I'm with Phil, I don't think it would be considered a spring. I want to experiment with smaller needles as well, just haven't gotten around to it. I just remember reading Dr. Jobe and his results were that the axle bore around 20 or 25 thousands was optimal. You could also use drill blanks for axles as they are real straight and sturdy and they come in all sizes. I get those from MSCDirect. Not sure how to make the bushings that small though and still get a smooth bore. Maybe you could be our Guinea pig and do the research and development. We can then follow your lead.
