So we have been racing cars at work and keeping records. Well the record time holding car is not in first in heads up racing just in time trials "SOLO RUNS". I was just wondering what is the explanation for this, no other car can touch his time but he cannot get into first with it.

Wow...We'll have to get Stan Pope on that one! ;D
Seriously, Doesn;t make sense like the Tax Code.
One of our physics guys is going to have to take this one on.
Hope you are placing high! GC

I've known of this happening to cars. It has something to do with the vibration and effects the other cars have on the track. I know a guy who experienced the same problem with a mod he built. It was the fastest car he had built (up to that time) and should have been smoking at the monthly proxy race. The car ended up running some of the worst times he had ever run with a mod. He thought the car had been given some extra tuning by the USPS on it's way to the races. When he got the car home and ran it on his track, it was still flying ?? After scratching his head for awhile he decided to put a car on every lane. Guess what, the car slowed way down. He never could get it to run right with other cars on the track ?? I'm sure someone out there can give the scientific explanation for this. It's not me though ;D !!

I've noticed the same thing... my cars run much faster when running solo down my two lane test track than when racing each other. I'm guessing this must have to do with track vibration (I can't imagine air turbulence would be a significant impact, but I don't have any data to support either idea).
Perhaps some cars are more sensitive to track vibrations? My "fastest" car (fastest when run solo on the test track) has finished behind my "slowest" car (slowest when run solo on the test track) in the last two PWDRacing races... drives me nuts and I haven't a clue as to how to explain this phenomenon.

When testing on my two lane- the faster car is always slower than it was by itself if raced against another car- part of the PWD Mystery!
