Scioto Valley District PWD Rules v1.0
1. LOST CAR RULE: We will attach or write an identification number on the bottom of your car, this will correspond to a card filled out at inspection time. The card should have the following info:
Car Name
Cub’s Name
Telephone Number or email address
Pack and Den Number
Cub Rank
Outlaw Class only - Relationship to Scout, Scout’s name and Pack Number
An Owner's Identification Number will be assigned during registration.
2. ALL CARS MUST PASS INSPECTION TO QUALIFY FOR THE RACES:
A. CARS MUST conform to the Official Pinewood Derby Rules, which are supplied with each Derby Kit. These instructions are a clarification to those rules.
B. WEIGHT:
1. Shall not exceed 5 ounces as weighed by the official scale.
2. NO LOOSE MATERIALS of any kind are allowed in or on the car (such as lead shot or weights).
3. All weights shall be securely fastened within the body of the car. No taping of coins or other weights to the body of the car shall be permitted.
C. Dimensions:
1. HEIGHT: Maximum car height is 2-7/8 inches. All Details and attachments must be within this dimension.
WIDTH: Overall width is 2-3/4 inches. All Details and attachments must be within this dimension.
2. LENGTH: Overall length is 7 inches. All Details and attachments must be within this dimension.
D. WHEELS:
1. Only the wheels provided in the BSA kit may be used.
2. BEARINGS, washers and bushings are prohibited.
3. NO WAFERING OR GRINDING OF WHEELS. LIGHT SANDING of existing flat surface permitted.
4. No rounding or spiking of the wheel shapes is permitted. The Wheels may be sanded or turned flat the hub may be sanded or coned.
5. No hubcaps allowed.
E. Axles:
1. As provided by the official Cub Scout kit. No substitutions.
2. Axle slots do not have to be used and the wheel base may be extended as long as the front wheels to not extend past the front of the car.
3. Powdered graphite is the only permissible axle lubricant allowed.
4. Axles may be polished and smoothed.
F. Body:
1. As provided in the official Cub Scout kit. No substitutions.
2. May be painted or have stickers as long as they are permanently and firmly affixed.
G. Propulsion:
1. Gravity only. No other means of starting or acceleration allowed
2. The car shall not ride on any type of springs.
3. No Bushings allowed.
3. TRACK: Scioto Valley District will be using a 42’ Aluminum BestTrack with Microwizard Timer. Each Child will get a minimum of 6 races, 2 in each lane. The XX* lowest cumulative times will Qualify for finals. At which point there will be a single elimination tournament to decide the top 4 Places. Those who lose in the semi final race will then race to decide third and fourth place.
4. CAR REPAIR: A "Maintenance Center" will provide tools and personnel to repair or modify cars.
A. Only cars over 5 oz. or under 4 oz. will be modified. Owners must request modification.
Only slight, damage will be repaired, based on the decision of the Center Chief, whose decision is final.
In no event will repair to a car be allowed to cause undue delay of any race.
5. IMPOUNDING: All cars will be impounded in Racers Alley immediately upon completion of inspection. No racer shall handle or touch any car following final weigh in and registration. If a car has passed inspection and a rule violation regarding the car is subsequently discovered the Center Chief will contact the owner and permit correction of the defect (if possible) prior to the race. If the defect cannot be corrected or the owner cannot be located then the car will be withdrawn and not permitted to race.
6. DECISIONS of the Track Officials, Judges and Maintenance Crew are final.
7. ONLY ONE ENTRY PER PERSON: One Boy-One car.
Divisions are as follows… Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos, Best in Show and Outlaw (Scouts with non conforming cars, Leaders, Parents, Friends, Brothers and Sisters) In General the same weight and size regulations apply however there are no limits on wheels and axles.
Awards are as follows… Trophies 1-3 Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos, Best in Show and Outlaw. Grand Champion Trophies 1-4 Overall District Champion (includes Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos) Outlaw does NOT Qualify
To be honest were are going to be very lenient this year allowing a lot more than most districts to make things a little more fun, creative and laid back. As long as the car isn’t wet with lubricant or is obviously trying to cheat the system the car will be able to race. All boys may enter as long as they pre-register so for this year (2005) there is no qualifying for Districts for 2005, anyone may race this year!

Best in Show – May or may not occur, will be based on number of entries, 10 entries minimum to hold judging event.
