Hello everyone, Good day to celebrate for me. Today I used my 42' best track and hosted this years girl scout derby which included both my daughters. At first everything was going fine at set up. I even made a test derby of three old cars just to make sure the timer was communicating with derbymaster software. Worked good and we were just about ready to start the race with everyone looking on. Then I clicked on what I thought was open derby button where I had preloaded all 125 girls (yes 125 girls, at that was only because 29 didn't show up or pass inspection and it took me about 1.5 hours to load them all) the night before but, in the nervousness of running my first race I clicked create derby and then choose the derby I had loaded last night and somehow winded up deleting the whole derby. Needless to say I was and and and . Fortunately, I was able to get the Derby master people on the phone on a Saturday and they helped us restore the derby through an HTML file I had created last night for printing the schedule out. That still took 45 minutes but better than 1.5 hours. To sum up, my daughters took first and third in the race due largely to my intense studying of pinewood derby in my first year and learning sooooooo many things from you guys on this board. You're all great in sharing a lot of your talents with me just like I did today when some of the other dads came up to me after the race, handed me their girls' car and said "how can I make this faster next year". Man, that's a good feeling to know others strongly value your opinion on something when they ask YOU how they can improve and be better. Anyway, that's my success story for now and hopefully it will be the same at my son's BSA derby in six weeks. HyperDrive

Great job to both girls, and their dad!! Great job, running the race Barry. I know what you mean about the jitters of running your first race. I ran my first race last year for a neighboring Cub Scout Pack. There were only 27 boys there, but boy was I nervous until about the 5th or 6th race. I will be doing the scoring for our Pack's race this coming Saturday. We should have over 80 boys, plus a sibling/parent's race. Hopefully over 100 race cars.
I wish your boy success in his upcoming race. March seems pretty late to run a Pack race. When are your districts? What type of track does your Pack run on? Ours runs a 6 lane 35 ft. wooden Piantedosi track.

Great job!!! I get nervous before every race -- even the second one in a day!
I have gotten to the point of saving the rosters to a memory stick just in case!
The worst problems are when a wire/connector breaks!
I hope you don't have those "experiances" -- I carry a good soldering iron and multimeter with me.
Question: Were the Girl Scout cars a lot more "creative" then the boy's cars?
Keep up the great job!

I already told people that from now on I'm backing up on a flash drive. HyperDrive

If anyone is interested here is a link to a very short clip showing one run each for both of my daughters cars. It's got some cool Ozzy music with it done by my brother in law. www.tsnproductions.com/gallery/2486585#130480237The first race shown in lane two was the fastest time of the day. HyperDrive

Phil Thanks Phil, We seem to do okay in the scout world but WIRL racers always knock me back a step or two. Except for my hot rod truck, I can't seem to ever break the 3.1 barrier much less get anywhere near 3.0. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Guess I'll just keep trying. Barry

So, now I get to see what I'm up against! Your wheels don't look heavy!
Boy, you really got 'em going over at DerbyTalk about mine! Geesh!
We ran a test tonight on the Pack track. We're faster on 4 this year than we were on 3 at WIRL. So, we're making progress...
I hope we both make Council. And finish 1, 2!
Looks like you had a great GS race! That's a lot of cars!

Update to our scout derby racing season: On march 10, my son slaughtered the competition at the pack race on my track. He was 0.1786 sec faster than second place. On March 24, last Saturday, I hosted the district race with my track and my son took 2nd place 0.0456 sec behind first. At our pack race, for fun we had an adult race where I built my wife a wagon car and she weighted it by painting the weights to look like a football, a doll with clothing, and three PEPSI cans. I just told her to put them in the back of the car but, she actually glued them in the way she wanted. Some of the other adults didn't want me to race a car, I can't imagine why ;D, but they agreed to let me. I was going to run one of my standard lightened wheeled cars but, I decided to take a recent car body I had made and the night before the race I threw some weight in it only making it 4.87oz and put HEAVY BSA wheels on it (I only trued the tread surface). My wife's wagon car had my ultralight wheels on it and was running pretty good in testing. The morning of the race I was the first person at the school and I'm standing there with my newly made car with no testing and my track and thought HMM, why don't I make a few test runs against my wife's car. Set them both on the track and pulled the lever and the first two runs my wife's got the jump on me as to be expected but, in the last 4' or so my car caught and passed her. I was surprised and pleased but, I was really trying to make the car slower hoping it wouldn't win(I just wanted to make some good competition). But then during the race, my car would always start catching up to her and almost pass a couple times but, couldn't beat her wagon anymore. Anyway, she took first and I took second place over all about .04 sec behind her. Anyway, it's been a lot of work but, we've had fun with the racing. Now it's on to Council for my son and his car next month. Very, very fast competitors. I'm already starting to bite my nails. HyperDrive
