Hello to all, I was just wondering trying if there are any other wirl members racing in the Royal Rangers out there. I was curious about your pinewood derby rules. What type of tracks you run on. Hey since I'm asking for that what state your from. We race in Ohio Post # 2.

Outpost #147 from Florida.
Pinewood Derby program in our area has kinda withered.... Last event we had only about 60 cars, a third were Commander (Adult) cars.....
I have not raced in WIRL or PDDR, yet ;D But I'm working on a car currently.... Adapting my build technique from "screw& dowel" to nail & wide wheels has been a challenge.
Great to hear from another Ranger! We are definitely a minority in Pinewood Derby

I'm from Salt Lake and have been doing BSA races (I own a Beta Craft "Challenger" track) for the past 7 years. I've yet to see a Ranger or AWANA race locally. I personally do about 50 derbies through out the year for the BSA, many for diverse religious groups (Jewish, Baptists, Methodists and the local LDS). Since trying my hand with PDDR and WIRL in Lima my fastest times have been cut by 1/3. There are truly some great guys to rub shoulders with in the pine car arena.

Hello to all again,
Thank you for responding. Its good to know that there are other pine heads out there in the rangers. Last year was my son and I first time racing with the rangers/missionetts and had about 60 to 70 cars. Its been all racing since then with us going to sectionals and then to the wirl events in Lima and Huntington. Even a first time proxy. race in this October's wirl. Just out of curiosity do you guys race with cars that are 71/2 in long, 71/2oz? We do and I just wanted to compare notes with someone else.

We use "screw & dowel" cars (S&W crafts/GPH)
Our "Official Royal Rangers Pinewood Derby" rules:
Cars must be made from a kit sold by Gospel Publishing House or any other kit using the same components;
* A pinewood block * Two wood dowels for axles *Four metal wood screws to attach wheels to wood dowels * Four wheels
Kits with metal axles through the width of the pinewood block are not allowed.
Cars must meet the following specifications:
a. Max length including all attachments 7.5 inches
b. Max width 2.75 inches
c Max height 3.0 inches
d Max weight 156 grams
e Minimum under car clearance .375 inches
f Minimum distance between wheels 1.75 inches
The contestant must use the parts provided in the kits for their intended use.
Weight may be added to the car in order to bring the car to maximum allowed weight, they must be permanently attached.
No wet paint.
No lubes that may foul track
Once a car is registered, no further work may be done to it.
Pretty basic, last event we let just about anything that fit on the track not dripping paint or more than 156 grams race!
The kids and many Dads had a great time!

Thanks f.a.s.t racing. Those are the same rules we have as well. Except for we don't buy the gosple publishing house we usually buy the BSA block sets. I can say that at the this years camp o rama there were 320+ cars there with some very fast times there which tells me there is still alot of intrest. From looking at some of the photo's not alot of the cars that were entered didn't use the GPH sets either. By the way I like your team name very creative!
Hey DSracing I have a few questions for you can you get me a email adderss or phone # to contact you I have some questions for you.

Hey nice car! What tools did you use to make it and where did you get the wheels? A friend of mine is looking for some to put on his cars?

boanagers,
The wheels are S&W Crafts. They used to be the main supplier for GPH. Not sure who is suppling GPH/Royal Rangers now. S&W wheels are very round, seem to be made of harder plastic. The bores are very smooth out of the box.
The S&W screws are way better ;D Very thick & shiny plating takes very little to bring them to mirror polish.
