A group of pine car enthusiasts at our church are coordinating our 2nd annual “Pinewood Wars”, a race in which teams made up of 2 adults build a car with supplied tools and kit, and race the same day.
We build from 8:00 a.m. to noon, break for lunch until 1:00, and then race our creations.
The idea of this race was to bring all participants to a level playing field, taking out the precision-drilled axle holes (must use axle slots), lathe turned wheels & axles (not that I think that there is anything wrong with those items), to gain more interest and participation in our racing program at church.
We thought it would be good way to introduce the hobby to more people, and double as an additional workshop for some parents to be able to help their kids for the upcoming Awana race.
We supplied 3 drill presses, 2 band saws, 2 belt sanders, sand paper, Krylon fast drying paint, wood glue, 2 glue guns, several wheel mandrels, and lead weights.
I machined a mold to pour 3/8” & ½” round lead weights that were made available to all participants. Both cavities are about .015” undersized of a nominal drill. Our pwd team poured the weights well before the race.
We included a list of suggested tools to bring in our flyer.
Our 1st annual "Pinewood wars" team race held in 2003 was huge hit, especially with the "rookies".
The veterans may have been too helpful (just kidding) as 3 rookie teams took home places 1-3 (my wife and I finished a close 4th).
We had 10 teams racing, and all had a great time of fun, food, & fellowship!!
We are asking each team to split and invite another non-pinewood for the next "War" which will be coming up in November of this year.
P.M. or e-mail me for more info any of you pineheads living close want to participate. We race about 30 miles directly south of South Bend Indiana on Highway 31.
