I ran our Cub Scout Pinewood Derby Yesterday for the first time. It was pretty nerve-racking. I had a few technical difficulties to start off - problems with projector. Then the computer wouldn't communicate with the printer (worked fine at home- had to hand write the schedule for the Boy Scouts running the races - had about 54 cars ??). Then after the 8th heat we had trouble with sunlight coming through a window and made the timer not work . From there on out it was smooth sailing - kids had a great time -some pretty fast turn around time for heats (lowest was 14 sec) -averaged 20-40secs. I am really proud of my boys. They worked hard on their cars and their effort paid off. 1 & 2 in Pack. I sent some info from the race for Mr. Slick to post with the other Pack Races on the web site -Look for Pack 111. The track was set up at 35'. My car "Dum Dum" (Raced in the first PWD Racing event this year) took first in the Open Class. Here are some photos from this Cub Scout Derby Season: Ben's (Wolf) car took first(green one) Sam's (Bear) took second (red rail car)

Congrats WartHog! And congrats to the Little Hogs as well. Sounds like you guys had a great time. Do your boys advance to a District or Council race? If so let us know how it goes there also.

Thanks Guys! Congrats to you and your girls HyperDrive! Sounds like you had a lot of fun running the race too.
Barga, Yes, both boys will be going to the District Race. 1-3 from each Pack get to go. I actually need to set it up still - it looks like it will be in March. Should be fun -we'll let you know how it goes.

District Race was today. Ben's green car took first place overall. He was so happy! My other son was sick so he was not able to attend. He wasn't upset though - he had won last year. He was glad one of the alternates from our pack had a chance to go to the race in his place. Congratulations Ben and Scott, great job!!! Sorry Sam was not able to go and be a part of the event. I hope he's feeling better. Sam being happy for the alternate having a chance to go and place, is what scouting is all about. I know you're proud of him. Phil

Congratulations to your son. That track looks like a 35 foot besttrack. Those were like WIRL equivalent times from some of the best racers. Did all the kids have lightened wheels? Hyperdrive

Thanks Wheeler, Slkrnsnt and J 2CE. Congratulations to your son. That track looks like a 35 foot besttrack. Those were like WIRL equivalent times from some of the best racers. Did all the kids have lightened wheels? Hyperdrive Thanks Hyperdrive. It was a 42' Best Track and our rules allow only light sanding of the wheel surface - this is the only wheel modification allowed. This shows why it is difficult to compare times when even the track is the same. This track had a lazer beam starting mechanism in which the timer was activated by the first car breaking the beam. This would account for the faster times compared to some other Best Track set-ups. My sons car ran in the February PWD Racing event and recorded times of 3.05-3.06 there. We did not make any changes to the car for the District Race other than adding graphite.
