I have the 18 inch Dremmel. It was affordable at 239.00 and with an attachment can be used as a dremmel tool.

Personally, I favor a bandsaw. It has more power and can more easily cut through 1-3/4 inch pine. The scroll saw is more suited to fine detail work on thinner material.

I will always recommend the scroll saw over a band saw due to the increased safety when used by kids.
I use my saws at workshops for kids to build their cars. The saws are each normally running for 4+ hours every Sunday afternoon. I had to add a third saw this year since the lines were getting too long! (Nice problem to have.)
I have "consumed" 2 dremel scroll saws in the past several years and currently am using 2 Ryobi scroll saws and one Dremel. The Ryobi saws have been great! The Dremel is a new one this year and I have been having problems with the guard coming loose frequently. It has a set screw that is put in from the bottom and it seems to get bounced loose after every couple of hours of use.
My purchase philosophy is buy which ever one is on sale at the time.

I have both a band saw and a scroll saw. I like the band saw because I find it more powerful and durable. The bench top belt sander is a must for shaping the car and then of course don't forget the drill press and the mini lathe, air brush and . .. ....
