Hello and thanks for offering this post. It has helped me and my son more than you know. My question has to do with axle scratches. We purchased Max V's speed axles and proceeded to shine them up starting with 1000 grit all the way up to 3000 grit and then DuPont polishing compound. Looking at them with a magnifying glass they are very shiney but they have a couple relatively deep scratches. Will this be a problem even though the axles are very smooth and shiney? I once read that the scratches are OK because they help hold some graphite. What do you recommend I do? Sand them down some more or leave them as is? I thank you in advance for your expertise.

Do the scratches run all the way around the axle, or are they just one one side? If they're only on one side, then put that side up and it won't matter, as the scratches won't contact the wheel bore.

When you are polishing axles or any metal for that matter what you are doing is scratching the metal and that is what produces the shine. Minor scratches won't effect anything unless they have a sharp edge to them. roosclan is right though, if possible put the scratches to the top. If they are all the way around the axles I would not sweat it, that is what many "speed" axles have just deeper more precise cuts ;D Good luck!
