Districts are coming up, and for years, we've had a leader that has brought a direct drive powered car to the derby every year. This year I decided to give him a run for his money! I decided to go with an RC jet plane ducted motor and an 11.1v battery pack. Here's what I came up with: I also added a switch underneath to cut the car off when it hit the stop section Wish me luck! Both of my boys are qualified for the last year possible. My oldest crossed over to Boy Scouts in February, but since he finished 2nd during the Pack race before crossover, he can still run. Here's a pic of their cars:

I would love to do that. I've been wanting to build a "beat this car" for a match race. Let us know how you do.

I realized there were a few flaws in the car, so I went about rebuilding it. Just finished up this morning. I tidied up the wiring a little, and added a 3 degree rake to the ducted fan, so the car will have downforce. Let me know what you think! It is running 1.421 seconds on my 35 foot Best Track! By comparison, my sons' cars that won Pack, and are going on to districts are running 2.590's.

Well, Districts were today. The '5 Star General' placed 9th overall. His car was fast enought to be 3rd or 4th, but another car jumped at the finish line and hit it. The car slowed considerably after that. The other car 'Caution' took 2nd at Districts. This was our best finish to date!
The fan powered car surpassed my expectations by a mile! While the winning Scout derby car was turning 3.60's on our 49 foot Best Track, the fan powered car was turning consistent 1.70's! It was almost scary to have to catch at the end! I got some video, but haven't looked to see if it came out OK. If it did, I'll post it later.
