How smooth is too smooth? I am planning to polish my sons axles to 50,000 grit for our upcoming race. However, I am concerned that if we get them too slick the oil will not adhere to them, and the car will be slower. Has anyone tested to see if it is possible to get the axles too slick?

You can't get them too slick that oil won't stick. Make sure you you don't use too much oil. What kind of oil are you going to use?

We are using NyOil. We will apply it as recommended.

Once you oil the axle blow the excess out with some canned air. The kind you use for computers and stuff. This will leave the thinnest film of coverage.

I would suggest a close inspection of those axles during the polishing process, and you should do it under magnification. You'd be surprised what will get past your eyes One day I remembered I have an 8x Lupe and light box I used to use to view negatives. I looked at my "completed" axles in horror when I saw all those scratches left behind. So now I am looking into some sort of magnifying system I can use while I am working up through the grits. Oh, and remember; the focus point is very narrow, so what might look sharp may not be. While re-polishing them, everything looked better. The previous scratches went away and I was happy again. Then I realized (by accident) I was looking at them 'out of focus' The Lupe I have is designed to rest on top of what your viewing. The axle is just slightly out of that focal range. So I had to lift it up just enough to see correctly. I saw a slick electronic microscope that can connect to the PC. You could inspect them while you polish ! Does anyone have a set up like this ?

My boys has a microscope that connects to the computer. I just might try it! Good advice!

Wow - 50,000 grit. Is that for real or a typo? I have been able to obtain 12,000 grit which is about 1 micron. Mothers polish is said to be less than that, but I have never found anything close to 50,000. Can you verify this number for us, and where to get that product?
