I wanted to know about the new 2009/10 BSA wheels. What is their availability? Our scout store has boxes with a 2010 label, but the wheels in the box are the old style. (1999?) Are people finding the new ones around the country? I'm sure if my son and I build our cars and we are the only ones with the new wheels- there will be some unhappy Pinewood Derby teams in our pack. Thanks, Citius

Thanks, Citius Citius, The new wheels are starting to get circulation. It seems some places are getting them, yet others still aren't. If you can find any of the new 100th Anniversary Big Rig kits, they have 18 of the new wheels in them !! So far the only avaliable colors in the new wheels have been black and yellow. I'm not sure how the packs will handle the new wheel sitaution this year, it may get very interesting ? Lucky 13

Thanks, Citius This is causing problems all over. The "new" wheels have been available in southeastern Ohio for about 2 months. The wheels in the kit are the old ones. I haven't heard anyone getting new wheels in the kit. The new wheels are being sold in the tubes. Mostly black but I was able to get some yellow early on. The new wheels are official BSA so they do adhere to the rules. You are right, some will not be happy but I don't see a solid solution this year. Most of the people working the scout shops don't even know there are new new wheels, The best you can do is let your pack know what you know so there aren't any surprises. steepslope

Do the new wheels obsolete my recent investment in my derby toolkit? How are they different/better? (wondering if I should have picked up the 18 wheeler the other day).
I'm a second year scout father. My son tied for 3rd in the tigers last year, but we hope to wins wolves this year. Hopfully I didn't invest in a set of tools that will be obsolete before we use them.
Thanks.
Thanks for the info.

The new wheels have made for some interesting times here at Derby Worx, but we have been able to secure MANY sets for the season. The fun thing is that the people we work with at National B.S.A. supply think that everything in the new tube is the new wheel but this is not true. We thought we had a method for identifying them (black tube cap = old / white tube cap = new) but that got squashed with this last large order recieved. there are a LOT of the old ones in the scout stores currently BUT everything out of National Supply is new now so we will see them filtering in to the stores this season. We even recieved a shipment where around 15% of the order was old style wheels just last month so we figure they are getting te rest of them out. The wheel is nice, but can still be improved upon a bit. our testing is finding them to have between .003" to .007" of radial runout across the board. This means that trueing them is still a performance improvement AND it is easier to get a perfect wheel with the Pro Wheel Shaver because there is not as much to remove as the old wheel. We have been getting test wheels as low as .0005" with the shaver. The outter hub face is a new point, it has a double step (likely from where the hub pin goes into the mold half) This moved the friction point out from the inner edge of the hub bore to the middle of the hub face. We have been using the Pro Outter hub Shaver to cut this surface flat and move it back in like the old wheel reducing the point of friction by 50%. The axle head is ever so slightly set back in the wheel but very un-noticiable, and it you use the Pro Axle Press to re-shape your axle heads it brings it back up a little and like like the old wheel. Just make sure you watch your axle head size to the recess, a slight reduction in the OD of the axle head is recomended for clearance. The inner hub of the new wheel is much nicer but still has a slight flat on it (remember, everything adds up in PWD) and can be quickly improved with the coning end of the Pro Hub Tool and then finish polished to a friction free symetrical gloss. The hub bores are good but it has the usual taper to it (has to to get the mold to release), but do benifit from polishing and the Pro Hub Bore Polisher still works well here also. So there you have it, the new wheel is lighter by 33%, is a better mold but still has its little defects that you can improve upon and the Pro Outter Hub Shaver is now more important on the new wheel than it was on the old wheel. Good Luck this season to all. Racer X New wheel left, New wheel with recess cut out with Pro Outer Hub Shaver. Untreated new wheel w/ B.S.A. axle left, Treated new B.S.A. wheel w/ B.S.A. Axle.

RacerX or someone from Derbyworx,
Do you know when we will start to see the new wheels at the online retailers or able to purchase from you with the standard prep (same thing as a cleaned up old stock wheels - hubs reamed, tread trued, hubs coned truer)?
Thanks

Racer-X,
Any idea when Max-V will have them for sale ? I checked the web-site and could not find them.
Also, will they come with the outside hub step down removed or is that something the consumer will have to do themselves ?
Thanks,
Lucky 13

Lucky, The step is gone. I have a set in my grubby little paws Just email Randy, he'll hook you up. Thanks for the info Psycaz !! Lucky 13The Derby Worx / Warp Speed Pro Stocks have the outter step cut out, and look a little closer if you have a set and what do you see? This is a new trick for the 09/10 season on the Pro Stocks, Inertia Lites and the Ultra Lites. The Derby Worx MM-01's (mold matched and CNC machined) wheels will still have the step in them, but the builder can take it out theirself and polish the bores and have a fantastic set of wheels at a economical price. A few more goodies to come yet!!!!! Racer X
