I have seen pictures before and have been wanting to do this for a couple of years. With my limited tools and skills I could never figure out a way to do it and feel good about the accuracy and balance. When the new wheels came out in '09 the three mold dimples on the inside of the wheel gave me the " AHA moment" that I needed. They make perfectly symetrical pilot holes. Attachments:

The next step was to figure out how big of hole I could get away with and how to hold it or clamp it on my $50 Harbour Freight drill press.

A half dozen wheels and a couple of fingers later I learned that the side of a block works great. In retrospect I could have drawn a line in the middle down the side of the block, drilled small holes through the dimples, nailed the wheel to the line, and lined up the hole on the line. Increasing the accuracy. I just eyeballed it and there was some room for discrepency. The balance is not perfect. I suspect the balancer that MaxV sells could take them to that Nth degree that we all strive for. Attachments:

They final key was the right bit. These bits make fantatastic holes in all things derby. All the modestly competent wood workers out there probably know that, but I had figure it out the hard way. I had bought this bit for the tungsten cylinders and it turned out to be the perfect size and type for the wheels. The sharp tip dropped right in to those mold dimples and 3/8" is exactly as large as you can go. Attachments:

Four out of the five fastest cars were running our wheels and axles. On a side note: This was a fun and clever way to get an action shot of the cars going down the track. I have not yet seen how it turned out. Attachments:

Great video Stacks59!
I love the "pinewood derby" pinewood derby car. Pretty clever. I think the one father said it best when he talked about the race being one of the most stressful days for the fathers and most fun days for the kids.
Congratulations !

Thanks Darryl! Dominant By Design! I have had your book for a couple of years and credit you, MaxV and this board for all. In fact when I said: I was talking about Figure 119 Perforated Wheel Sidewalls Note Alignment Mark Described in Later Section pg. 93Anyone looking for a great Speed Book I highly recommend it! www.derbydominator.comHere is the whole "on car camera" video db.tt/eiiyG4b

I have often wondered why we do not see more drilled sidewalls? I understand that balance may be effected, but it does not require mad machine skills or high end equipment. How much weight was removed in doing this?
