It appears there are two different set of "official" wheels and axles.
Amazon, Michael's, and various hobby stores sell official BSA wheel and axle sets manufactured by Revell in China, while my local scout shop sells "Made in USA" tubes of wheels and axles.
Wheels: out of the tube, the Revell's appear shinier with a slight lip along the inner edge.
Axles: the bevel on the point is longer for the Revell axles. The Revell axles are missing the ridges along the shaft, but the crimp mark is slightly longer along along the shaft.
Any thoughts or recommendations for selecting and preparing one vs. the other?

Buying from the Scout Shop supports the Boy Scouts of America and your local shop.
As per your posting, Scout Shop Wheels are made in America, not in China.
Additionally, I have purchased Revell Wheels and compared them to Scout Shop BSA Wheels.
The Scout Shop BSA Wheels have much less side-to-side and radial run-out.
I have compared modified Scout Shop and Revell wheels prepared for Limited Class at PWDR. The Scout Shop modified wheels had faster times when compared to Revell Wheels.
Hope this information helps you make your decision. Murph

It is kind of tricky, but the Revell product sold as " officially licensed by the Boy Scouts of America " and they are not actually " Official Boy Scouts of America Products " .
Also notice that Revell products are not in the Boy Scout Stores.
Food for thought.

I like the fact that the scout shop supports the scouts.
And in a race that is won or lost by thousandths of a second - why take chances?
I can't help but think that the metal in the axles may not be as strong and bend a bit while racing. It is tempting since they don't need the burs removed, but I am staying with the proven winner.
About the only piece of the Revell kit I consider is the wedge wood block. The wood seems harder. But I need compare the tolerances against the scout version. But even if I use the block the wheels and axles get tossed in a box and I buy a few tubes of wheels from the Scout shop. That is also where I get the weights and tools.
