After a successful Derby this year, I am working on some ideas to make it even better next year. One of these is to hold one or more workshops prior to the race next year to help those kids and parents that don't have the knowledge or skills to build a competitive car. I got a lot of positive feedback from parents when I asked around.
I talked with the owner of a local hobby shop and he will let us use his classroom for the workshops. He had hosted PWD workshops in the past and was excited that someone wanted to do it again.
It looks like some of you have successfully put on workshops, so I hope you can answer some questions about how you did it.
1. What kinds of tools do you typically have provided?
2. Do you provide safety glasses and such or do you ask them to bring their own?
3. Do you mess with bench mounted power tools or just have them use hand coping saws, files, and other hand tools? Do you use the Derbyworx tools?
4. If you have them, do you let the kids and parents use the band saw, drill press, or other power tools themselves, or do you show them how and do it for them?
5. What is a good ratio of knowledgeable parent helpers to kids?
6. Do you set up a station for each operation (cutting, weights, painting, axle prep, assembly, etc) with a parent helper at each?
7. How do you account for any liability issues? I always practice and preach safe use of tools but I still don't want to be sued if someone does something stupid.
Thanks for the advice!
