I'm working on my first wirl mod car this year...hoping for Oct. I have a few questions about wheel modifications. I believe it was Pat Emerson? or Buckeye? stated in an earlier post about wheel mods for s. Pat or Buckeye, if I have mistakenly referenced you guys, I'm sorry. I can't seem to find that post at the moment, but I want to remember comments about shaving wheels from Randy's Max. I have purchased supplies from Randy in the past and have been Very pleased with his products and service. At the moment, I only have Randy's s with no modifications. I would be interested in comments from others on what mods are being done to these wheels and how much weight should be removed? To follow-up with wheel mods, how much clearance between wheel bore and axle should be used? (using sb-10 lube). I know there are a lot of aftermarket axles with varying diameters for different wheel/axle combinations. Thanks for ANY comments/suggestions. I'm just trying to not CRASH and BURN at Oct. race. With all the great builders and the high level of competition in WIRL, it certainly has raised the bar for everyone. Congrats on all entries in Sept WIRL race and Lima race. ;The posted pics of cars have been awesome! And FAST, too. Hopefully everyone has learned something that will help them improve next month.

I have not shaved any of Randy's V1 wheels, but have had someone else do it for me. Randy sells two versions now. V1's and 's... not sure if he will continue to sell the V1's if he gets rid of them all. Anyway, some of the guys will grind them down to almost a razors edge. You have to be careful, because they will chip on you if they are too thin and the track is rough. These guys talk in the thousanths... I ran a set of Randy's wheels last month on Legend and on a car in Lima. They are very thin and really don't need any additional mods. The V1 wheels are pretty tough and can be sanded down to a thinner profile.. It's kinda up to you. Trial and error, we all do it.
On the axles, I run Awana axles, which are .....092's because I want less play between the wheels and axles. The speed axles are a little smaller. Again, this will take trial and error, and lube application.
Read through these boards and see where we all have our own little tweeks and spins...
That's about all I can help with. I'm sure some of the more experienced guys can be a bit more technical.
Good luck and I look forward to seeing an October car.

Thanks Pat for your info. I have a set of V1 wheels from Randy as I ordered them months ago....maybe late winter/early spring. Sounds like I can work with them some. They have been in storage as we were building a new house.
I was leaning toward the larger axle due to the same reasons. I never liked a lot of wobble with bsa cars when my son was in scouts. He has aged out and did not want to pursue boy scouts. However his dad has the pinewood fever and not sure he wants to be cured!

I am fairly new to the mod game myself, so I am still learning. I would use the axles that Randy sells for those wheels with the Sb-10. Polish the bores, break them in with several runs and polish them again. Don't over apply the SB-10. You can shave the wheels but stay away from the tread work the inner area between the hub and the tread. Align and align and align. Run those wheels tight(not much gap between the wheel and the car body). BTW this is for his original wheels. I have no experience with his new wheel. I also recommend The Derby Worx RS wheel. Remember, I am new at the mod game and still learning.

Buckeye, thanks for your comments. Sounds like we need to call Randy and order a set or two of his wheels. I also need to order some awana axles too. I have ordered a set of derbyworx rs wheels.. have not received them yet. Maybe they will be in this week.

I used a set of 's on Samson this month. They performed alright - looks like they may need to be modified a little to do better. They actually produced one of the fastest times I've had on my home track though.

In July I ran the V1wheels and axles. I thought the axles were too loose so in Sept. i ran a combination of and DerbyWorx wheels with the AWANA axles to get rid of some of the loosness. I also mooved the wheels a little closer to the car. I don't know if it helped or not because a lot of cars are running slower times.
Since the AWANA axles fit tight in both sets of wheels, how do you get your clearance? I removed about .001 from the axle on mine? How do you do yours?
I knew I had to do something to get the slop out, but I know missed something too. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We appreciate all the great comments on the Derby Worx Pro "RS" Wheels.
It is hard to make a product that is fast and durable, just ask Warpspeed, his living depends on it and that is why the "RS" wheel is the way it is, it will endure 100's of runs without breaking down. Also, it was Derby Worx that showed the world how a rubs and grinds on a track and did pioneer the "Anti-Friction" design to limit track contact long before the "".
We now have our own C.N.C. lathe in house at Derby Worx so we can manufacture, design and change on the fly and have a few new twists up our sleeve, but my question to the group is: How long do you expect a Racing / to last for competition?
We have some test pieces here at Derby Worx that are so light and so thin that they make the Pro "RS" wheel and the "" almost look like pigs, but the question is durability.
We are boring our hubs now to a .005" clearance with our axles for exellent fit and finish and have greatly improved our existing product by bringing it in house this summer and even have some other materials we have yet to run.
But if anyone is truely interested in pushing the limits of speed with total disregard to durability, hit me up in a PM or e-mail: Racerx@Derbyworx.com
